Are we nothing more than a bag of chemicals?
In a paper published recently by the National Academy of Sciences, Anthony Cashmore unequivocally asserts that we are nothing more than a bag of chemicals. Consciousness and freewill, he claims, are no more than illusions: “The reality is, not only do we have no more free will than a fly or a bacterium, in actuality we have no more free will than a bowl of sugar.”

These people are so illogical it's hillarious. Did Cashmore come to this conclusion by a choice or did his bag of chemicals bring it about, while my bag completely brings about a different conclusion? I bet his bag is in eternal conflict as he goes about his daily living trying to make "choices" that he truly isn't making. They just happen. He must constantly be saying to himself, "I didn't truly make that decision. The chemicals did. Oh sh##! what will they have me do next? Oh what does it matter? I can do whatever I want and blame the chemicals. I'm free!!! Oh wait. that can't be right."
And he "argues" that the courts use this fact. Should they "decide' to use this fact? Aren't they already just following what their chemicals are telling them to do? How do they change from one method of decision making to another unless it's already programmed into their chemical makeup to do so.
And his paper is full of: "author's contention", "It is my belief" "I propose" "my contention", "I am … struck", "I have suggested", "clarify our thinking." What makes his "bag of chemicals" more valid over the chemical outcome of those that need "appropriate phychaitric help"? Or perhaps, say, my cat?
How the hell do people like this get learned degrees?
-TWYou are the most remarkable thinker! I wish I could take the trash that is being spewed by the likes of this author, put it through your brain and make beautiful arguments like yours. Better yet, if my brain worked like yours. Utopia if the whole world's population had the same abilities. You have an "inspired" talent for seeing clearly and making logical, yet "readable" rebuttal. I hope you appreciate your gift and use it in your life and in the enlightenment of others.

You and I and those like us. and then there are bags of chemicals like Adolf Hitler, Lenin, Stalin and this so called man. They have no logic, no humanity and no reason. The planet would be better off if they were fed back into the volcano from which they were spewed out.
Next time they may come out a little more balanced.
-Leonard BarkerGreat post, TW. This is an example of what happens when man totally rejects God. As Paul says in Romans, "their minds became darkened". In the past I was often puzzled at the illogic of beliefs and statements like this. Understanding what Paul said has resolved this for me.

-janiceIn the 20th century three men lived at the same time. They were probably the most evil triumvirate all all time. Stalin, Hitler, and Mao. Between them they killed tens of millions of people. People were just bags of chemicals to them to be used, thrown away or killed. How many more millions will die before such people like Cashmore get it? It is happening in our own counrty. Life is not valuable here anymore. There is more than one way to destroy the lives of people than just outright murder. They can be starved, imprisioned, warred upon, displaced and discouraged beyond recovery. As for me, I intend to be faithful to the truths clearly and brilliantly displayed in the Judeo-Christian scriptures, and yes, Jesus the Christ! Before me, there are millions of witnesses to this faith. Presently, there are millions of witnesses being persecuted for what they know is the Truth. In this country believers are being assailed more and more. The church that Jesus established IS established and already declared victorious. It is assailing the gates of hell and hell will not prevail. Be radical for Christ. The rewards are far greater than this world has to offer.
