Deathbed Repentance

“Can you repent at the moment of death and still have the same salvation as someone who’s been a Christian for many years?”

That’s a tricky question, but I think it’s a fascinating one and certainly one that many people are concerned about. We talk about foxhole faith, when people cry out in desperate moments of crisis or postpone to their deathbed the moment of committing their lives to Christ. Some people say that it doesn’t make sense for somebody who has been a Christian all their life to be in the same state as somebody who did as they pleased all their life and waited until the last second to get their accounts square with God.

Remember, a convert confesses with his mouth AND believes in his heart.

You cant have the one without the other, and if the mouth confesses but the heart is not enabled then it is faith without works, ie there has not been a work in his heart.

This is why it was so devistating for those who in the face of persecution deny with their mouths presuming that to believe with their hearts is sufficient enough. They are the same as those who now confess with their mouth at deaths door but cannot believe with their hearts.

There are two kinds of repentance, one way is to say whatever to save your own bacon- this is very human. When faced with peril we will do or say anything to escape from the snare (death).

BUt then there is true repentance, light is shone on your dark life and you see that you have offended our Lord. You see your sinfull and woofull condition. Youe realise what a price the Saviuour has paid for you and you gratefully recieve Him and are truely eternally gratefull.

But can God pluck one of HIs children even from the grave? Yes He can.

Q2: How many things are necessary for you to know, that in this comfort you may live and die happily?

A2: Three things:[1] First, the greatness of my sin and misery.[2] Second, how I am redeemed from all my sins and misery.[3] Third, how I am to be thankful to God for such redemption.[4]
