Hipster Faith

Here’s a riddle: A young man walks into a building. From the outside, it looks like a nondescript, run-down, abandoned warehouse. Inside he finds mood lighting, music with throbbing bass, and young people wearing skinny jeans and superfluous scarves. A bar off to the side offers drinks of some sort, and a frenetically lit stage is shrouded in fog. Jumbo screens display what appear to be music videos. Everywhere people text on their iPhones. A young woman with a nose ring and a vaguely Middle Eastern tattoo comes up and introduces herself. She makes awkward (but refreshingly earnest) small talk about her passion for community gardens and food co-ops. She asks him if he has heard Arcade Fire’s new album, and compliments him on his bushy beard and lumberjack look. Beards like that are cool, she says. Eventually she asks him for his contact information. Question: Is the man in a bar? Or is he in a church? It could go either way.

  1. I am aware of much of the arguments of this subject.I believe if our youth are exposed to realness and truth from their parents, there would NOT be all the pushes from Pastors/YouthPastors to try so many different things to get the youth to church. Parents seem to forget that it's them that their children learn from. If the children see: praise ,praise, at church then at home it's fuse, cuse, run the preacher and fellow members down, then what are the children really being taught at home! Yes I know sometimes the best you can do it's not enough. But I'm convinced if children grow up in a real christian home they will not stray and they won't have to be begged with all types of gimmicks to come to church. The children that are raised to see and experiance the REAL christian life at home, will gladly for the most part go to church. Also we must as parents,be mindful of influences that our children are expossed to on a daily basis and keep a check on that. It's our job to lead by example to our children.I believe Godly parents produce Godly children. If we look to our Heavenly Father for wisdom from His word,it will guide us to be the parent that our children will want to mirror. Even to the willful act of faithful church membership.

  3. Who dares to allow themselves the narrow minded belief that the church should be one way or another…you can't market or contain the Holy Spirit! If the Word is being preached and the souls are being saved, I don't much care whether that is taking place in a bar or a church. In a sense the bar is a church and many a man has met another who led him the RIGHT way in a bar because some caring person who loves Jesus took the time to tell him…in a bar. The organized church tends to become a "family" and looks inward and tends to the needs of each other while failing to get out into the trenches and make themselves available to HIM in the blood and the mud and the BEER! You can sit in church or you can take that church to the street. Jesus hung with the fringe; the whore, the tax collector…he is our example! The traditional church fails to see this…or chooses to not see this. More and more of the "chain churches" are dropping their standards and allowing all manner of evil to flourish and young people see this hypocrisy and leave. Just the slant and tone of this piece tells the story very well….and it isn't this cut and dried and this , the and us mentality is divisive and unnessary. Peace. ; )

  4. I think this is blashemous to a thrice Holy God..This is flesh, things of the flesh 100% You do not reach young people through things of the flesh. If you are a friend of the world (or its customs) then you are an enemy of God. This is a slick manuever of the enemy to cheapen God's Holiness and bring down His true nature and character to the world's level. God help any pastor that would approve something like this. They are definitely not Spirit filled preachers that do such things in my opinion…you say how do you know? My answer is get Spirit filled for once in your life and you will sense the discernment of this ungodliness.

  5. Thanks for the article, I truly loved reading these posts. I stumbled across your blog as i was googling a little fact finding for work and I have been trying to make the full post to load but it is very odd only more or less 50 percent of the post is coming up for me. I must refresh the web pages on your website a lot to get your entire post. Could it be your the internet web site web host provider or my firefox. I have attempted posting this several times except it doesn't appear to be showing up inside the comments. Do you think I need to restart my web browser?
