Democratic attorney general candidate James Anderson said Thursday he was joking and being satirical when he said he didn’t understand how a person can claim to be both a Christian and a Republican. But the remark made Sept. 14 in Centre at the luncheon meeting of the Cherokee County Democratic Club has stirred the ire of state Republican officials who said it was judgmental and in bad taste. “Alabamians hold their individual faith dear, and James Anderson has stooped to a new low to question the Christianity of all those who vote Republican,” state GOP chairman Mike Hubbard said Thursday in a news release.
