I went down last week to McCosh Hall with some friends from my church to hear professors Robert George and Cornel West GS ’80 discuss what it means to be a Christian in today’s world. The sweltering auditorium was packed with students eager to listen to two academic celebrities from opposite ends of the political spectrum. Although it wasn’t mentioned alongside his various honorary doctorates when he was introduced, George was best known to me as chairman emeritus of the National Organization for Marriage, a conservative advocacy group that funds anti-gay marriage television ads. Admittedly, I oppose the group’s aim in general, but those ads in particular struck me as factually misleading and malicious in tone. I was interested to hear if George would mention this aspect of his work as he discussed his Christian life.
