Yes, it’s true that John Granger has taken on the name “The Hogwarts Professor” and was dubbed “The Dean of Harry Potter Scholars” by Time magazine.

And, yes, he’s been interviewed by magazines, TV news shows and film crews galore about the “Harry Potter” books and movies.

But this isn’t a case of a scholar hitching his wagon to a pop culture phenomenon and riding it to fame.

To hear Granger, a former Marine and Latin professor who lives in upstate New York, tell it, it was all an accident.

An Orthodox Christian, when Granger first read about the books he disapproved, and told his family “We don’t do sorcery.” But when his then 11-year-old daughter got a copy of the book from a friend of hers in 2000, he had the opportunity to study it for himself.
