We in America cherish equality.  “We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal.”  What we mean by that is that all people should stand as equals before the law.  All people should have the right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” and the government shouldn’t discriminate against one group, nor should they subsidize another group in its exercise of these rights.

Strictly speaking, all men are not created equal.  Some are more intelligent than others.  Some are stronger than others.  Some are more motivated and pursue their goals with more zeal and ardor than others.  Some people are better looking than others.  Some are born with advantages of wealth or social position that others do not have.  We must accept this fact with equanimity.  We who trust in an all-wise and benevolent God who guides our steps and ordains all of our days have no need for some authority to “level the playing field.”  We accept these circumstances, not as something random and unfair, but as the very plan and purpose of God.  We do not consider them accidents or mistakes, but rather providential circumstances.  They are not fundamental injustices to be rectified by some governing authority, but instead opportunities to look for the blessing of God.
