While most parents settle playground “house” feuds by suggesting little girls split their roles into mother, sister, and aunt, teachers at a Swedish school offer another option: “We suggest two moms or three moms and so on,” explained Lotta Rajalin.
Rajalin is director of Egalia—a preschool in Stockholm committed to “freeing” children from “gender bias” by creating a gender-neutral and lesbian-, gay-, bisexual-, and transgender-friendly curriculum.
Among other measures, teachers refuse to address students as “him” or “her” in favor of a gender-neutral “friends.” Instead of calling men and women by their respective Swedish pronouns “hon” and “han,” they use a neutral, non-existent “hen,” convinced that ambiguity will lead children to wider views, self-discovery, and equality.
The school functions from a suspicion that society gives boys an unfair edge, assuming that gender differences are the foundation of inequality. According to Rajalin, what matters is that children understand that their biological differences “don’t mean boys and girls have different interests and abilities.”
