The new Kansas budget gives money to public health departments, hospitals, and local clinics, but will no longer fund Planned Parenthood.
Gov. Sam Brownback said the provision helps keeps the state budget balanced. He also said Planned Parenthood doesn’t qualify for family planning dollars “because of its business practices.”
According to Kansans for Life, Planned Parenthood only offers a narrow set of services focused on “sex-related ‘problems’ of reproductive-age women” In contrast, the group pointed out, local health clinics provide the same sexually transmitted disease education, pelvic exams, and contraceptive services that Planned Parenthood does—sans abortion. Kansans for Life added that the poor have easy access to these health clinics, which offer other services, including immunizations, screenings, physicals, and referrals.
