The sanctuary hushes as Johnnie Moore, campus pastor at Liberty University, stops the praise band mid-song.

“OK, OK, wait just a second,” said Moore, silencing the musicians like an orchestra conductor.

He turns to the thousands of students who came to Thomas Road Baptist Church to pray Sunday night.

“Do you mean these words?” he said, letting the air grow thick with silence.

“This is the church. It’s not just songs. It’s asking myself, am I singing a lie to God? Or am I singing this not as a lie but in faith…?”

A rising leader at Liberty, Moore, 28, is on a mission to uproot hypocrisy, or what he calls “fake religion,” in the Christian church. His message is simple: He wants Christians to live what they say they believe.
