Mildred Francis blinked back tears and thought of joyful times at Central Presbyterian Church.

She remembered herself as a rambunctious 5-year-old goofing around in the pew — probably the same one she sat in yesterday morning, a handful of rows from the front.

She recalled her 1939 wedding to Charles Francis, the baptisms of her four children, watching her three daughters pledge their love on their wedding days.

Yesterday’s service was the last for the 151-year-old Downtown church that was driven to close by a shrinking congregation and limited dollars to maintain the deteriorating house of worship.
