In October, 24-Hour News 8 anchor Eric Halvorson traveled to Bosnia-Herzegovina, to a mountain village to see first hand what many believe to be a miracle: the Virgin Mary appearing in a vision to a woman who has seen the visions since she was a girl.

Until 1981, the village of Medjugorje was a mostly unknown spot between the mountains. It didn’t even have running water. But, in that year, several children said they saw the Virgin Mary on the rocky slope of one hill. Life there began to change.

When the area was still part of Yugoslavia, the Communist government tried to silence the young visionaries. It failed. Members of the Catholic church doubted the children and challenged them. They failed.

This year, believers celebrated the 30th anniversary of the apparitions.
