Worshippers at Huffman’s Covenant Baptist Church on New Year’s Day sang a Rich Mullins hymn titled “Screen Door,” the lyrics of which included, “Faith without works is like a song you can’t sing.”

Comprised of fewer than 50 members and holding services in a double-wide manufactured home, the congregation has a blueprint for a larger membership that will operate out of a permanent structure to be built on adjacent church-owned property.

As opposed to the single-minded pursuit of the two-fold objective, the plan calls for the demonstration of faith — recognizing that salvation is by faith — through good works and obedience to God’s word.

The good works transcend the holidays. Along with other congregations, the church recently participated in fundraising for a Houston Police Department holiday food drive held with the support of the Fiesta grocery chain and Pepsi. Covenant members handed out food boxes obtained there to area residents in need.
