Pope Benedict XVI has named 22 new cardinals, announcing he will elevate them in a formal ceremony Feb. 18.

Among those selected is New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan.

Some of the duties of a cardinal within the Roman Catholic Church is to serve as an advisor to the pope.

“It’s as if Pope Benedict is putting the red hat on top of the Empire State Building, or the Statue of Liberty, or on home plate at Yankee Stadium,” Dolan said following Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Friday morning.

The cardinals to be created also include prelates from Hong Kong, Berlin and Prague and some key Vatican offices.
