Alaska Airlines retiring meal tray prayer cards
Alaska Airlines is ending decades of giving passengers prayer cards with their meals, saying Wednesday the decision was made out of respect for all passengers.
Airline spokeswoman Bobbie Egan said the airline heard from customers who preferred not to mix religion with transportation. The decision reflects respect for the diverse religious beliefs and cultural attitudes of Alaska Airlines’ customers and employees, the company said in announcing the change.
“Some customers were comforted by the cards and some didn’t feel religion was appropriate on the plane and preferred not to receive one,” she said.
The cards began as a marketing ploy 30 years ago to differentiate the regional airline from its competitors. The company admits the idea was borrowed from another airline.

I have yet to get on a plane and fly anywhere without saying a prayer for GOD's traveling mercies on that flight. Maybe some out there don't think they need it, but I don't think that is a wise choice to make.

How about simply asking if the passenger wanted a prayer card? That’s incredibly simple and would not have landed Alaskan Airlines in the stupid columns.

They already made that stupid decision, Dntmkmecmoverther. The article says that the airline stopped offering meals to customers in the main cabin. Apparently, Alaska Airlines thinks that only first class customers are worthy of a decent meal during their flight.
Needless to say, I don't plan on purchasing a plane ticket from Alaska Airlines any time soon … for many reasons, including this one: they do not show respect to ALL of their customers. Just a few who complain about prayer cards or those who can afford first class plane tickets.

1) Jesus falsely prophesies DIRECTLY to the high priest (Caiphas) that he would live to see his second coming. Jesus uses the term “coming on the clouds of heaven”. This clearly negates the “coming” as the resurrection but as a return to the earth on CLOUDS, not his return in human form from the dead. Matthew 26:64 & Mark 14:62.

3) YET AGAIN, Jesus claims those standing RIGHT BEFORE HIM shall see the Armageddon. Matthew 16:28 “There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” Don’t let Christians lie to you and claim Jesus was referring to his modern day believers. The words “some standing HERE will not taste death” clearly refutes such nonsense. Obviously the people he was speaking to died, and curiously Jesus STILL isn’t here to claim his kingdom.
4) Jesus falsely prophesies that the end of the world will come within his listeners’ lifetimes.
Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. (Mark 13:30-31 NAB)
He also said to them, "Amen, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see that the kingdom of God has come in power." (Mark 9:1 NAB)
5) Jesus falsely predicts that some of his listeners would live to see him return and establish the kingdom of God.
"Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God." (Luke 9:27 NAB)
6) Jesus implies that he will return to earth during the lifetime of John. (John 21:22)
7) Jesus says that all that he describes (his return, signs in the sun, moon, wars, stars, etc.) will occur within the lifetime of his listeners. He purposely defines their generation and NOT a future one. Considering that NONE of those signs took place during the resurrection and that he uses the term of “Heaven and earth shall pass away”, Clearly Jesus is prophesizing that nearly 2,000 years ago Armageddon SHOULD have occurred. Luke 21:25-33
"There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on earth nations will be in dismay, perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Well Jeff, DUH to you as well. The Christians who founded this nation gave us two documents to keep: The Declaration and the Constitution. Both of which would never have come out of any secular belief system; they only work and are sustained within a Christian ethic. Outside of Christianity there is no foundational basis for knowing good from evil. That is something that if you are not blind nor deaf, you ought to hear or see every 2- 3 minutes and be glad you do.

The Treaty of Tripoli should have put this myth to bed before it even became a myth. It states” “As the government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian Religion…” A government treaty created in the initial years of our country, signed by the President and ratified by the Senate, stating we are not a Christian nation. It was read aloud to the Senate, and each Senator received a printed copy. This was the 339th time that a recorded vote was required by the Senate, but only the third time a vote was unanimous (the next time was to honor George Washington). There is no record of any debate or dissension on the Treaty. It was reprinted in full in three newspapers – two in Philadelphia, one in New York City. Correct, we are to respect and obey the laws of the land. UNLESS THE LAW IS NOT INLINE WITH GOD'S WORD. If our government chooses to remove God from this great America, then Christians are obligated to oversee the government and bring God back into all of America's doings. His name is spelled with a capital "G". You may want to show a little respect yourself. Notice the big "J" up there.
Authority must be understood by every Christian since it is the entire basis of our relationship with Christ. “Authority” means “the right to command and enforce obedience.” When we accept Jesus Christ as our “Lord,” this means that He is supposed to become our “boss” or “authority” over our whole life (Luke 6:46). In addition, the Bible becomes the source of authoritative instruction for our Christian Life (2 Tim. 3:16).
Since submission to authority is basic to Christian Life, it is important that we understand that all authority is a God-given institution, and all types of authority are related. The Lordship of Christ is the highest source of authority that we must answer to (Matt. 28:18), but God has also ordained at least three other categories of subordinate authority in the world that we must also submit to:
(1) The Family – Children are to obey their parents (Eph. 6:10). The wife is to cooperate with her husband, which is the head of the family (Eph. 5:22-24, 1 Tim. 2:12), and the husband is to submit to Christ and love his wife (Eph. 5:23,25).
(2) The State – We are to cooperate with those authority figures and obey the local and federal laws of the land, within the boundaries of God’s laws (1 Pet. 2:13-14).
(3) The Church – Christians are to submit to the headship of Christ which is exercised through His Spirit (Rom. 8:14), His Word (2 Tim. 3:16), and Church leadership (Matt. 18:17-20, Heb. 13:17).
God has established these authorities as the “delegated” extensions of His authority. If we resist cooperation, we are in effect, resisting God’s own authority and Lordship. This is why Paul told wives to submit to their husbands “as to the Lord” (Eph. 5:22).

What About Corrupt Authority?
Obviously, in the absence of Godly and moral values, there can sometimes be abuses of authority and perversions in government. Such was the case when Peter and John were forbidden to preach the Gospel by the Jewish Sanhedrin. They replied, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge” (Acts 4:19). The only circumstance that disobedience to authority is justifiable by scripture, is if it conflicts with the laws of God. Authority should be cooperated with except in those situations where laws depart from the basic moral and righteous principles of God’s Word.
Paul tells us to pray for all those in authority: “ I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Tim. 2:1-2). God can use our prayers for those in authority, to either change their heart or remove them from power entirely. God reserves the right of administering discipline and reproof to those who represent His authority (Rom. 14:4, 1 Chron. 16:21-22).

When we read through the OT we see lots of cases of believers confronted with how to relate to the state: Abraham, Isaac and Jacob all had run ins with the authorities. Josef became PM of Egypt. Moses was the founder of a new nation, he served as the lawgiver. The time of the judges was chaotic because everyone did what was right in their own eyes Judges 21.25 JDG 21:25 In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit.
In David and Solomon we see the ideal kings and through the prophets we see men of God confronting the kings and the people with their sins and injustices.
Some would criticize the preacher who tries to preach on this topic saying you shouldn’t mix politics and religion, I say that the Bible is full of this subject and it needs to be taught from the pulpits of this land like it once was. If you want to see some political sermons go back in history to the various crises in our nation’s history.

. God Is Sovereign over Government
In the last couple of years there has been considerable controversy over the Pledge of Allegiance. Why? Because of the phrase “under God” which was added in 1954. Why was it added? Because in the 1950′s America realized that we were at war with Communism and Communism was deliberately atheistic. While many people disagree with this phrase being in the pledge, saying that it turns the pledge into a prayer, I believe that it merely acknowledges the truth of what Paul says here in Rom.13. America and all nations are under God’s control and sovereign authority. Any person or political party or judge or legislature or executive who wants to remove this line from the pledge, is either ignorant, that is uninformed, or they consciously reject God’s authority over the state.
Let us look at Rom 13:1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
The main point here is that God is sovereign over government. Government was God’s idea and he allows or appoints all the governments to exist. Look at Jesus in John 19.10-11″Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.
“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.
JN 19:16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.
So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). 18
Pilate was doing something cowardly and unjust, yet he was fitting perfectly into God’s plan for the crucifixion. He was guilty of sin, yet fulfilling God’s plan (paradox).
Obviously we have a problem when we then look at the Hitlers Stalins, Idi Amins, Sadaam Husseins of the world and say, how could God establish these monsters as governors? God has generally established government and rulers for good, but there are clearly evil men who usurp government and use it for evil. We will deal with that issue later. For now, it is a general principle that God is sovereign over all governments.
The word for authority in this verse is exousia, a delegated power, not kratos, which is raw power.

Why did God create government? As soon as Adam and Eve sinned, government became necessary eventually. Otherwise you would have the law of the jungle, survival of the fittest, Hobbes wrote: “During the time men live without a common power to keep them all in awe, they are in that conditions called war; and such a war, as if of every man, against every man.
“To this war of every man against every man, this also in consequent; that nothing can be unjust. The notions of right and wrong, justice and injustice have there no place. Where there is no common power, there is no law, where no law, no injustice. Force, and fraud, are in war the cardinal virtues.
“No arts; no letters; no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death: and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short.”
The founders of our nation realized that because man was sinful, man needed to be ruled by law, and so they sought to establish a government of law and not men. Hence our Republic as opposed to a pure democracy.
Very quickly after the Fall you have the first murder, and then another murder and then mankind was so wicked that God was sorry that he made man and he sent the flood.
Paul says in Rom13.3 that rulers are a terror for those who do wrong, implying that the purpose of government is to restrain evil and commend what is good. That is the essence of what government is for.
There is quite a range of government theory.

The goal is to find the forms of government that most carry out God’s mandates to government; to restrain evil and promote justice.
Look at 1Tim.2.1-4 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone– 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
We are to pray for our government so that we can live in peace and godliness and that will aid evangelism.

In light of Rom 13 and our founding documents what we discover is that Rom 13 can rightly be applied to the average American voting citizen, for we the people are the rulers, we choose those to rule us for a time, then we choose others.
III. Government Is to commend what is right
Government is to commend what is right in v.3 of Rom13. Government should promote righteousness under God’s authority. Look at some of the OT laws and how they relate to today:
Lev.19.9-18, 33-36; 24.17; Amos 5.24; Eccles.8:11
When Paul says that in v.6 we are to pay taxes, agreeing with Jesus, we know that it does take money to run the govt.
IV Government is to bear the sword and restrain evil.
This is absolutely related to capitol punishment. Government actions are always, ultimately conducted with the implied threat of the bayonet. Therefore, government has an obligation to do as little as possible with as little force as possible.

This is a link to a record of airline safety records. While Alaska Airlines is doing better than some, it hardly has the best safety record among its competitors. Delta and Southwest both have a safety record that is over 5 times better than Alaska Airlines, and they both fly more flights than Alaska as well. Obviously the prayer cards have not provided any additional safety for the passengers.

Those Alaska Airlines prayer cards would simply make me feel good, and I'd accompany it with my own prayer while flying. It was unique, it made Alaska Airlines unique, even if it was a public relations ploy borrowed from another airline. I think this is an executive mistake by Alaska Airlines, I wonder if their Atheist ridership will increase now, or will it still remain the one or two a week?

It is a shame that an airline will allow complaints from a few to stop a 30 year tradition that was appreciated by so many. As one gentleman stated, I have never flown that I did no ask God to protect me and everyone on the plane and help the pilot of that aircraft make right decisions. And, to have a prayer card issued was a welcome sight. WAKE UP AMERICA!! We DO NOT need to stand back an take this. My son flies to and from Alaska every three weeks for his job and I ask God to go with him every time. What can a prayer card hurt?????

She let him step into the small galley area where meals and snacks are stored. The monk stayed there for over half an hour and the flight crew needed to get access to equipment used to serve passengers. The monk insisted that he was not through; the flight crew insisted that he was!
Before the flight, the plane's crew was instructed that they were not to look any of these monks directly in the eye, that in their sect of Buddhism, this would be considered insulting or intimidating. Dutifully, the crew complied with this ridiculous requirement, even when explaining things to the monk who had overstayed his welcome in the galley.
There is a reasonable limit to accommodating exotic religious preferences, or at least there ought to be!

I can slide the card under the tray so I don't have to look at it. I can give it to the steward or stewardess without comment. I am thinking that an intelligent and considerate person would do one of the first two options. The politically correct and very thin skinned individual will most likely do the third option. No one forced them to remove the cards. They should have let whoever complained fly another airline or walk. I'll guarantee God will turn His back on them. Wait and see.

If it weren't for those changes and the influx of other religions as a result, it would be simply a matter of people understanding that they live in a predominantly Christian nation and that this kind of thing simply comes with the territory.
