Fleecing the flock

With a nudge from their pastor, the 25,000 members of the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church near Atlanta opened their hearts, and their wallets, to Ephren Taylor. And why not, given his glittering credentials? Mr Taylor billed himself as the youngest black chief executive of a publicly traded company in American history. He had appeared on NPR and CNN. He had given a talk on socially conscious investing at the Democratic National Convention. Snoop Dogg, a rapper, had tapped him to manage a charitable endowment.

So when Mr Taylor’s “Wealth Tour Live” seminars came to town, faithful ears opened wide. Eddie Long, the mega-church’s leader, introduced Mr Taylor at one event with the words: “[God] wants you to be a mover and shaker…to finance you well to do His will.” Mr Taylor offered “low-risk investment with high performances”, chosen with guidance from God.

Divine inspiration, alas, has given way to legal tribulation. For many investors, the 20% guaranteed returns proved illusory. Mr Taylor (whereabouts unknown) stands accused of fraud in a number of lawsuits. Bishop Long, a co-defendant, has urged Mr Taylor to “do the right thing” and cover any losses. The charges are not the first blot on the minister’s reputation: last year he settled for an estimated $15m-25m claims that he had coerced young men into oral sex.

If Jesus didn't want them fleeced, why did he call them his flock?

    • http://www.zionica.com Alex

So you are a shrill voice of another pathetic little anti-Christ. Just continue to trample on the Blood of Christ as an un-Holy thing and you to will spend Eternity away from the Presence of the Lord God Almighty. But you don't have to, as His loving kindness is offered to "whom so ever will" as all who call upon the name of the Lord Jesus will be saved. Your choice.

      • Steve

        And you'll find yourself in Acts 19:13-16 . . .

  • bighoss

After Eddie Long's disgraceful and perverted behavior, it seems remarkable that he would still be in the pulpit, but he-e-e-'s back!. See http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/under-god/pos

It seems even more remarkable that Long's parishoners would place credence in his recommendations for investment of their money. Moreover, anyone who might have made a decision to trust their money with this Taylor trash on the basis of Snoop Dogg's choice of Taylor to manage his "charitable endowment" is leaning on a broken reed. As to the high incidence of Mormons being caught up in scams like those run by Taylor, I can only say that anyone who has fallen for the big scam perpetrated by Joseph Smith, Jr. is surely ripe for scamming by lesser lights like Ephren Taylor.

Tsk, tsk, tsk, you need to bone up on your spelling, bighoss. It is actually spelled parishioners.

Jeff, are you an out of work English teacher???

        • http://rationalresponses.blogspot.com/ Jeff Dixon

Bighoss kindly pointed out a spelling error I made yesterday. I was returning the favor.

Cool"Tolerance is the last virtue of a dying society" AristotleSemper Fi, ~Jer

          • Steve

Got a citation for that quote? I haven't found it in Bartletts or any of the Aristotle texts Perseus has on line. I waded through a few hundred google hits that repeat it, but none of them give a reference to a specific work, which is suspicious.
Besides, nobody here listens to Jesus' commands on how to treat strangers, so why should they care what some pagan Greek has to say about anything?

          • bighoss

And I appreciate it; I have misspelled that word for a long time, but will no more, thanks to Jeff.

    • Myrtlelinder

Big boss, this sounds like America. We have been continually fleeced for more than three years, we see it, we know it, and nothing happens. The fleecing continues. We sit and watch it, all trickle away! Who or what are we waiting on to stop it???

  • Kalev

These people got what they deserved for running after a false gospel, the prosperity gospel is in direct opposition to the Gospel of Yeshua haMashiach. I do not feel sorry for any of those greedy fools.

    • Johnny

I feel sorry for those who long so much for mammon and are led away from the only source of contenment.

    • bighoss

Is there no end of people seeking variant means of naming the Deity? What IS this "haMaschiach" stuff?

      • Johnny

bighoss, "haMaschiach" is a transliteration of the Hebrew word that is usually translated "the Messiah" or "the Anointed One"–which, when translated from the Greek equivalent, is "the Christ." Since this word is found in the Hebrew Bible, it is not an invention of man.

        • http://rationalresponses.blogspot.com/ Jeff Dixon

The Hebrew bible is an invention of man. ALL religious texts are inventions of men.

  • Myrtlelinder

Kalev,It is so easy for us to see what is good for others and we readily judge them. This so much more easy, than trying to find some way to help them. Their mistakes are ever more easy to see than our own. I take it you never made a mistake and that makes it easy to judging others. I have and I can understand the pain they are going through. I will pray for them to be able to see the way. I feel sure that they have learned a very valuable lesson. Seek GOD'S will before making a decision. That will be good for you, too, Seek His will before passing judgment.

    • Kalev

Telling it like it is bothers you? Typical of a nominal Christian today, twisting "judge not" out of context. These folks care more about material possessions than their faith in the only One able to bring them to salvation. Those people are of the world and not after the Spirit, so I do not feel sorry for their loss of money. I feel sorry their greed and materialism have deceived them into believing the prosperity gospel.

    • bighoss

Kalev is right about these con men (and women, e.g. Paula White & Juanita Bynum). The "prosperity gospel" hucksters are, for the most part, beyond help. They are consumed by greed and are willing to do or say most anything to get the gullible, ignorant, and naive sheeple taken in by them to send "free will offerings" in anticipation of a promised deluge of material blessings. If anyone deserves judging, these lying scoundrels do!

      • Myrtlelinder

If these people could see the things that we do and say, they could no doubt find thing just as much ugly in our lives as we find in their lives. I really do not like the way Paula White preaches, so instead of putting her down, I turn her off, but she is not sitting back doing nothing, like we are doing. It is not up to us to decide why she is doing what she is doing right or wrong. That is between Paula and God. I don't even know who Juanita is.

        • bighoss

It i$ pretty ea$y to $ee what Paula White and her ilk are $eeking!

  • Winston

Oh, but the Scriptures warn "each believer" against becoming a "man-follower" as doing so leads them away from Jesus.

Cue up Wall of Voodoo, 'Last Honest Man'

I distrust televangelists, ranging from a 'neutral' for Billy Graham and family to outright disgust and rejection for Pat Robertson, Jimmy Swaggart, the Bakkers, Oral Roberts, and the Falwells. Many of them are the reasons why I went pantheist and did away with any need for priests and ministries at all…

  • Myrtlelinder

I expect that you would reject Paul, James, John and even JESUS CHRIST, or would if they came back and preached the word. I agree there many out there preaching who should shut up and go home but unless we can prove they are preaching lies according to GOD'S Word, it is not our place to decide their standing with GOD. Maybe instead of whining and complaining we should find a work we can do for GOD and GET BUSY!!.

    • bighoss

It IS our place to make responsible decisions about what we are hearing preached as the alleged word of God, Myrtlinder. "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good." (I Thess. 5:21).

The religious world of today is packed with false doctrines promoted by false prophets. The careful Christian, who follows the scriptural admonition to "rightly divide the word of truth" (2 Tim. 2:15) will have no trouble discerning the greed-driven falsity of these prosperity hucksters. God's word will not support the glaringly false doctrines promoted by the likes of Paula White, her boy friend Benny Hinn, Robert Tilton, Creflo Dollar and their avaricious ilk.
It IS our place to expose these con men and con women and to help those who have been fleeced and deluded by them to see these money-crazed poseurs for what they are and to leave off gullibly supporting their lavish lifestyles.

    • http://rationalresponses.blogspot.com/ Jeff Dixon

How about showing proof that they are actually stating the words of god? You know, actual proof. Not another persons opinion, or bible verses which are only another persons opinion anyway, but actual proof that they came from god.
