The Catholic Church vs. ‘ObamaCare’

U.S. Catholic leaders are “fighting mad with the Obama administration,” says Michael Brendan Dougherty at Business Insider, and they’re taking the fight to the pews. Over the weekend, Catholic parishioners nationwide were read letters from their bishops decrying the feds’ recent decision to require religiously affiliated hospitals, colleges, and charities to offer insurance coverage for contraception, sterilization, and the “morning-after” pill — all of which the Catholic Church officially opposes.

Churches themselves were given a religious exemption from the new rule, which is part of Obama’s health care reform, but the bishops said forcing other Catholic institutions to comply violates “the fundamental right to religious liberty” guaranteed in the Constitution. American Catholics don’t agree with the church on birth control — 95 percent use contraceptives, and 89 percent say it’s their choice, not the church’s. Still, is the Obama administration abusing its power?

These rules are perfectly reasonable: Catholic schools and hospitals hire and serve people of many different faiths, says Kevin Drum at Mother Jones. And if these institutions “don’t want to follow reasonable, 21st century secular rules… they need to stop taking secular taxpayer money.” Pretend that instead of the Catholic Church and the pill, we were “talking about, say, an Islamic hospital insisting that its employees bind themselves to sharia law.” Obama critics would surely be “a wee bit more understanding” of his position. “If you take taxpayer money, you have to follow taxpayer rules”

  2. The argument is flawed there isn't a Muslim Hospital… and yes if it is a faith-based non-profit hospital it should operate by the standards in its by-laws and principles of faith. If it receives tax money it is still required to operate according to the IRS by the organizations standards (Colleges, Hospitals, Universities, and Schools). You can't have it both ways. IF the organization changes are by-laws and principals f faith, then they notify the IRS of the change then they comply with the law. BUT the government cannot mandate by order a change.

  3. If the government orders by fiat only one child per family and you already had 2 which one would give to the state to raise? Consider if by the whim of the government ordered that you of the wrong faith and had to attend a sanctioned faith would you also comply. OR your wife is not of the same race as you but that is now not allowed would you be willing to submit. Lastly, you are now 52 and because you are you’re not allowed to get treatment for what is a curable cancer because you are too old and your productive years are less than a 32 year old…would you surrender to such a tranny…if we allow this step to tell a faith-based group to stop what they believe is wrong we are! I for one will not!!

  4. The catholics brought this on themselves by supporting maobama for president and by supporting the democrat party over the years. When you run with rabid dogs, you are going to get bitten, fools.

  5. where were the catholics when this man was marching with his obamacare, they did not speak up then & now that they have forced it on the people we have a mess on our hands but of course we are not allowed to be political in our churches. God help America

    • Catholics, i.e. mainstream American Catholics, were not speaking out on this issue when Obamacare was being debated because over 95 percent of them were practicing artificial birth control, since their common sense ran counter to the Catholic Church's ineffective doctrine against contraception. It would have been patently hypocritical of them to oppose
a program on grounds that it that provided contraceptive services when they themselves were availing themselves of same!

  6. As a Catholic, I was SCREAMING against this man as he rose in popularity. So were those I know. 95% Catholics supported him? Not in MY neighborhood!!!!!!!!!!!

All Christians better pay attention, you are next. Will you just blame the victim when its you?

Ponder the fact that Muslims are exempt from Obamacare…..it goes against their religion.

PS Catholic hospitals have never made a religious obligation in order to serve the sick! Nowhere in the world! In most places of the world they were the FIRST to offer aid to the sick. This administration wants to limit them to serving ONLY Catholics with an open heart. This is VERY wrong!

    • I live in a strongly catholic area and must of these clowns are loyal democrats who vote a straight ticket. Thje roman church has a long history of supporting the democrats which makes it party to abortion, sexual perversion, and the rest of the godless practices of the democrat party. The church of rome is a wiling part of the democrat axis of evil; therefore its protestations ring hollow to anyone who knows the truth about the democrats and the church.

      • I grew up in an area that was predominantly Catholic and democratic (but that was in the 40's and 50's). Those who are joining the Catholic Church (at least in my area today), myself included in this group are not democrats. I think things are changing in this area in the Church. I know of no one who will vote for Obama today.

  7. As long as the world stands, Christians must fight the "Beast", the antichrist, the false prophet. They are consuming the world, today and HE only has us to fight until HE decides to end it all in a shout of, "GLORY, GLORY TO GOD TO THE HIGHEST, AMEN"

  8. @Catholics: You get what you vote for.

  9. awhile back, i saw a video on youtube, notre dame and the catholic vote. dude points out that some students were mortified that notre dame would invite the NOTED baby killer, barry soetero AKA steve dunham AKA barack obama etc….etc….to give commencement. notre dame ignored the students. i believe it was 58 or 59& of catholic's voted for soetero. i now believe that YOUNG catholic's are the religion's only hope, their elders are not only complete and utter moron's but, they stood by SATAN, and are now reaping, what they have sown. the only people to blame for the church's woe, is the CHURCH itself.

  10. All what is now known as entitlements should not be a part of the government. We should not be taxed for such. To care for the poor, the lonely, the ill, etc. is a mandate given to us individually. Isn't it interesting that pole after pole show that the Conservative People of this country are much more generous when it comes to donating to charities that their Liberal counterparts who are always complaining that the conservatives are hard hearted and don't care!!!???

  12. What you say may very well be possible. Perhaps those who voted for OB will redeem themselves in this up-coming election.

Young Catholics are in more danger today as far as their religion is concerned. The FEW liberal catholic leaders who foster all the liberal drivel have influenced many. Some students and millions of adults railed against The Fakir speaking at their institution. I was one of them. That man convinced the liberal few that it was ok to cover all signs of their religion. Those few didn't know how upsetting it is for Muslims to be in a room with a crucifix. I certainly hope they know NOW. It may already be too late for corrections but I pray not.

  14. Whether you are Catholic or not, we must stand up and protect the right for the Catholic Church form having to violate their doctrine from governmental designs. Otherwise we too will stand lose our right to protect our doctrine. Obamacare is bad for all religions. Abortions will be next.
