Super Bowl Caps Football Season Dogged by Prayer Controversy

The New York Giants and the New England Patriots face off February 5 in the NFL championship. The game, known as the Super Bowl, will be played in Indianapolis, Indiana and ends a season in which expressions of faith on the field by a player from another team ignited controversy.

Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow played with Bible verse numbers painted under his eyes.  After victories, he dropped down on one knee to pray and talked about his faith in the locker room.

"First and foremost, I just want to thank my Lord and savior, Jesus Christ,"  Tebow said.

The Broncos almost made it to the Super Bowl but lost to the Patriots during the playoffs, despite a winning streak with Tebow as quarterback.  But his displays of faith sparked a nationwide controversy, with many football fans inspired by it and many others mocking it.

They don't have to watch. It is not like Tebow plays every game. Why would they be scared of a little old Bible verse. Maybe they have more faith than we think.

I believe the big problem is that the anti-GOD mania, is so strong that a great, well known person is a Christian and is standing on his faith. They can't shake him and is is driving them crazy. REMEMBER TEBOW, EVERY CHRISTIAN IS PULLING AND PRAYING FOR YOU. REMEMBER THAT EVERY TIME SOMEONE SLINGS THEIR SLURS.

The non-believer should be terrified. There are statements in Scripture that bother me, and I'm a believer; so I have to watch myself very closely as well.

Who mock a young boy name DAVID and all he needed was his faith in GOD ALMIGHTY, 1 smooth stone and a sling to bring down GOLIATH! Christians, remember to place your armor on, each piece with prayer!

First, this article is misleading. Tebow has praised God, whether winning or losing a game. In truth, no one likes to lose, that should be obvious, but it seems ignorance is a tactic used a lot these days. Giving God the glory, in tough times and losing, is not easy…but, It only seems when winning the lottery or a sporting event you hear others praise God. People need to read more about George Washington, and the many times he went to God in prayer. It wasn't in winning. He lost battle, after battle, after battle, watching his men die with no food, no supplies, clothes that were tattered a torn, burlap sacks turned into protection for feet, walking in the dead of winter. Even in prayer, many times, Washington cried because he didn't know what to do. That seems to be when God is at His greatest in our lives…and with all the suffering in this world, keeping the context of whole truth seems needed. Football, is just a game. God is God, and that is what really matters. God Bless.

Tebow's criticizers need to get over the fact that Tebow is doing exactly what the First Amendment says he is free to do: exercising his freedom of religion. If his criticizers don't like it, they are free to move to a country that doesn't know what the word, "freedom," means.

The reason why many Christians do well in sports is that they apply what the Bible teaches and have less stress and more of a relaxed attitude towards playing the best they can and towards other people. Christians should have the attitude of playing to win.
Even though Paul was using this illustration for staying in fellowship with God and growing spiritually; it can also be applied to how believers should play sports.
I Cor 9:24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.
