Real-life couple says ‘The Vow’ removed Christian references

Based on the love story of two devout Christians, the movie version of “The Vow,” starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum, strips the tale of its overt religious themes, which has some Christian reviewers concerned.

The film is based on the true life story and book, “The Vow” by Kim and Krickitt Carpenter, which draws heavily on that couple’s Christian beliefs and the power of God to heal and shepherd a marriage through difficult times.

The book tells the story of  Kim and Krickitt, who met and fell in love over a long distance phone call in 1992, bonded over their Christian faith, and were married a very short time later. Just 10 weeks into their marriage, the couple survived a terrible car wreck that left Krickitt in a coma with severe head trauma. Upon waking, Krickitt experienced amnesia and was essentially married to a stranger, forgetting the last 18 months of her life.

Throughout the book, it is the couple’s religious belief in the unbreakable vow of marriage that keeps them together.

“You make a promise before God with your wedding vows,” Krickitt Carpenter told Fox411.com. “You have to take that seriously.”

  1. Surely the producers had to buy the rights for the book. If the Carpenter's wanted the film to reflect their Christian values and send a Christian message, they should have kept some control over the script. It sounds to me like they just took hollywood's money and ran.

    • Do you not have a clue, that these people once they get their hands on movie material they edit anything out or into it as they please? They will make promises about making it the way, you want but know when the make the promises, they will change it to suit themselves. "Sue them" you may say. Go ahead, sue them and see what happens, Maybe 20 years later you might see results and maybe you won't. The only thing you can be sure of, is the piles of money you will spend and lose, on the law suit. The only protection you have is "not let them get their hands on the thing", and even in that they have their ways to get what they want. 9)% of them do not want anything with "the taint of Christianity", (in their words) on it and will not publish any Christian material.

      -Myrtlelinder
    • I agree they were foolish for giving into the movie industry, I am sure that was an interesting and intimidating experience to begin with. I am not so fast to condemn them as Bobseeks is though. They should have kept control of the script? That sounds good but Hollywood can just walk on by and choose the next script. Would you just say NO or agree to sell hoping that it would draw more the the book and the real story?

An receive some need cash in the exchange. These two people wrote the story and sold the story what was done to it later is not on there hands.

  2. Isn't that what the atheistic, socialist left wants? Remove God from everything and our destruction is guaranteed.

    -Andy
    • Really? Our personal worship doesn't matter at all?

      -daves
      • Wait until you meet HIM face to face. I do believe you will change your mind. If you don't change it before then, that will be too late. He will say at that time, either "Thou good and faithful servant" or "Get behind me, I never knew you!" We all have a chance, we must grab it before it is too late.

        -Myrtlelinder
      • Are you responding to me? My response was to Andy who thinks that I will be judged on what happens to America.

        -daves
      • Dave
Andy was saying that was what the atheist want, in removing all references of YHWH/Yeshua from our lives, and most do. You wont be judged by what America does, but you will be judged by what you don't do, and that's to accept Christ, to know the son, is to know the Father. To deny the son, so shall the Father deny you. That's that! It is the only difference from a faithful believer and a Faithless unbeliever?

        -jericho777
    • What Atheists want and what soc—ialists want are two entirely different things. And Atheists do not want god removed from everything. Pray to him to hearts content. Just leave him at the curb when you drop your kids off at school and stop trying to make a prayer to Jesus the only way government starts a meeting.

  3. Unless you have more facts, you may want to restrain from giving out an opinion.

  4. The fact is God doesn't sell ! I agree it would seem the couple would have read the script and if it didn't,as it seems now, agree with what they wanted to portray, then would have been the time to say something not now.It should be of no surprise that Morality would not be included in any movie now days. All I hear is that it is not the dark ages any more and that no one has seen God. The problem is that if we do see God it will be to late to change. We are told that in the end times it will be as in the days of Lot and we read what happen to Lot and his family.

    -Wilbert Jennings
    • You can depend on it, we will everyone meet HIM face to face. HE will have something to say to each of us. It may be., "Blessed thou good good and faithful servant" or it may be, "Depart from me, I never knew you."

      -Myrtlelinder
    • Actually God-centered and faith based movies sell much better than half the sin-filled movies being promoted today. However, those in Hollywood don't want to admit those facts and change.

      -AnitaM
    • Respectfully, your absolutely wrong Wilbert!
I have read three reports this year alone that factually reported that Christian movies have been more successful in the past four years, than at any other time, and Happywood sales are dropping quickly. You may not see YHWH "Gd" But you most certainly see his inner and outer workings in all things. The first thing Sahtan does is to create a fictitious belief that their is no faith in YHWH, when that is achieved, he goes on to making us believe, that there is no hope in man kind. Then through the hopelessness, he will have created an allusion, that mankind must rid itself of certain ethnic groups, so that all obstacles are removed from his chosen path as a god, seating himself in Jerusalem. We see some of that now in Muslim held territories, we saw it through Hitler. In revelations YHWH turns mankind over to their own sins, can you imagine the horror that will take place when that is cast down amongst us, not even today, can we find such a pure evil, examples maybe of what's to come, but nothing in the way that a godless world will experience…The Muslims are a prime example of mankind's insanity to come?

      -jericho777
  5. I wouldn't be surprised if the producers discussed a more faith-focused version of the movie with the Carpenters when they first met.

    -Linda F.
  6. It is such a pity that you do not have any facts whatsoever, and dare accuse others, who are very wise in the WORD OF GOD (which is the most important facts that you could possibly have) of not having any facts.

    -Myrtlelinder
  7. If this couple were truly interested in getting the Christian message across, they could have gone to the Church that produced films like "Fireproof", Facing the Giants", and "Courageous" – all well done films with a strong Christian message. They probably would have received a lot less money, but the Christian message is more important. I won't go to see this film because it sounds like it is has been degraded to just another tear-jerking chic flick. Sorry if this offends you, but it looks like money and the desire for fame won out in this case.

    -Bobseeks
    • Good point, and also good movies that you mentioned. I am hoping that it was an error that they did not use good judgement. We've all been guilty of that at one time or another.

      -KnowTheTruthToday
    • Your absolutely right Bobseeks,
Kirk Cameron is a great example. There are some really good Christian movies and film makers who would have taken this story to task, the media won't mention it, except for the Passion of the Christ, which they tried to turned it into an antisemitic hate fest from Christians, who under stand / understood, that though the Jews were responsible for the Death of Christ, his Father was the one who chose them, it had to be them, in showing of his unconditional love, their importance is a sacred involvement, not an evil act in it's self…

      -jericho777
  8. A very good reason to not go see this film. Read the book.

    -OrlandoRican
  9. This is why I am actively boycotting any actor /actress, movie or documentary that voids our Christian faiths. Christian movies sale well as a fact, and all they are doing is hijacking a true story of faith, and making it about the power of mankind, void of YHWH/Yeshua, A very Oprah moment, and her thousands of ways into Heaven type passage that is running wildly through Happywood? When they can deceive mankind into believing there are other ways to YHWH instead of Christ, than, they will have essentially won their struggle to void out Christianity, and that's all they need or want to do…And the Jews making these types of movies, can also basically escape through their movies without the 2000 years of guilt and blame for killing Christ "Yeshua". So you see, it serves many purposes to rid them selves of the true nature of Christ and why he is the savior of mankind, not the other way around?

    -jericho777
    • I am sure your boycott is going to make Hollywood shake in their boots.

      -Jeff Dixon
      • Jeff Dixon
And they are. Have you seen the money they are losing for lack of theater goers and DVD sales? And I am just one of the many more who are finally standing up and making them take notice where it hurts them the most, their wallets and purses…They lost billions in 2010, and if it continues, two things will happen, either the stars themselves will have to take a hit on their earnings, or the directors make cheaper movies, and this is happening already Jeff…So yes, I have them shaking in their boots :)

        -jericho777
      • Amen – we need to be more discerning in what we buy – any business that supports evil should not get our money.

        -Bobseeks
      • The main reason Hollywood is losing money is due to piracy losses.

        -Jeff Dixon
      • Jeff
They are losing money because they are making crappy movies…Almost all of their movies that have been released are Liberal oriented. They are making them political in nature with their distorted world view, perceived on what is best for us, instead of what we know is best for our selves…No Jeff, people, Christians are waking up and saying enough of this filth, and aren't going to the theater or buying/renting horrible movies…

        -Jeffrey Hardin
      • Nonsense. Simply looking at list of the top grossing movies worldwide shows that people are more than willing to pay to movies that are not Christian based movies.

Does Hollywood make bad movies? Of course. But to claim that people will not pay to see secular movies is absurd.

  10. Let's admit it, most anything coming out of Hollywood is morally corrupt…in some form or fashion. Hollywood is all about entertainment, not playing up to God and moral values, except for exploiting it of money.

    -Winston
  11. Only people who fear the power of the gospel would dare remove references to the real reason why this couple made it. This only serves to compliment, in a backhanded way, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

    -Phyllsofical
  12. I'm just not going to see the movie. That will save me about $12 bucks and won't enrich their coffers.
