Dr. Peter Leithart, author of “Defending Constantine,” spoke Monday night at Union University about the controversies surrounding the emperor Constantine’s role as a Christian in the Roman Empire.

Leithart said despite his contributions to the Catholic Church, Constantine was baptized on his deathbed. He said Constantine emphasized God as a judge during his reign.

“He (Constantine) has a very keen sense that God is his judge, specifically Jesus Christ was his judge,” Leithart said. “He wanted the church unified because it would be pleasing to God.”

Leithart said Constantine’s baptism allowed him to enter into a new rank in the church. He said the emperor had many flaws.
