The Flickering Light of America

Whatever happened to the “shining city on a hill,” as President Reagan and other leadersonce used to describe America? The description, of course, originated with Jesus Christ. Yet our nation, once a shining flame of freedom, is well on its way to becoming a flickering ember of debt, despair, dissension, and defeat. It does not have to continue.

Who bears the greatest responsibility for this predicament? I believe Christians do—those believers who are called to be light and reveal “The Light” of the world in order to inspire the ongoing presence of a true shining city that cannot be hidden.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus made it clear that we as believers are both salt and light. Salt helps preserve that which is precious and important while enhancing the flavor. Likewise, the Christian witness should have a positive effect on every aspect of life and culture. Jesus said that if salt loses its effect, it is good for nothing but to be trampled under the feet of men. Sure enough, everything sacred is being trampled under the feet of those who consider God unimportant or non-existent. Faith, family, and freedom are being trampled by many who call themselves liberals, socialists, progressives, and activists.

"We the people" have MADE EVERY ATTEMPT TO DESTROY "THE LIGHT ON THE HILL, WHICH IS JESUS CHRIST."
Just look around and see how Christianity has been put down in your own lifetime, as an individual. We should look at the decisions and decide how much of this is our own fault.

    • John

I think we should stand up as christians have aganst abortion and fight to put the name of Jesus christ back in our schools, colleges universities public places reverse all moves made to exalt darwin religon. change the laws to make our leaders be christians. change the people who run the board of education another branch of government. Put respectable honorable person who believe in Jesus christ who are commited to our way of life. I have heard it said what this board of education has done to our children our future leaders of America is equil to an act of War! Yet the political correctors the athists rule over right annd wrong like dictators who actually only account for 2% of the population.
I am reading a book called the harbinger. I believe in is true many people believe God can bess you and make you happy etc.. but not accept any punishment for dising him. All you need to do is Look at Isreals history and you will see.

Read this article and then think about who you will vote for in November. Do you want to continue downhill by using liberals, socialists, progressives and activists thinking? The DNC will cheat in any way possible to swing the elections. If I recall, in history, someone did this in 1933 in another part of the world.

A good way to slow down the DNC greed, power and control of ALL US citizens is to hit them where it hirts – their pocket. Try not buying ANYTHING from those who place ads in the liberial media i.e. TV stations or newspapers. Just a beginning of the MOST inportant part of the country's and your life.

Is it any wonder that the liberals/Democrats are against any common-sense voter registration laws? What do they have against requiring voters to show an ID? I'll tell you what. Without having to prove that each voter is who he says he is, they can stuff the ballot boxes with votes from dead persons, illegal aliens, and non-existent 'persons' whose votes will, surprise, be cast for the Dem candidate.

      • bighoss

What they have against the various and widespread attempts to change the voting laws is that those changes are asymmetrically designed to discourage voters who are most likely to vote Democratic. The changes are being engineered by Republicans who desire just that result. The very extensive changes are being represented as being needed to combat "voter fraud," but the agents of these changes have nowhere demonstrated that there is any significant problem of voter fraud. Thus, much of the drive for ratcheting up voter identification requirements is based on lying misrepresentations of the facts! Being a Christian, I oppose lying, and so should all of you who claim to be Christians. Join me in opposing the corrupt Karl Rove and the rest of the manipulative weasels behind this attempt to torque the vote in November..

        • keyboardshark

bighoss says: " I oppose lying, and so should all of you who claim to be Christians." Yes, I do oppose lying, and one very simple way to ensure that a person who votes is not lying about their identity is to simply have them show an ID. I don't buy the argument that this is being used to disenfranchise Democrat voters. Most welfare recipients vote Democrat, yet they have to present an ID to get government assistance.

No, the only reason the Democrats are against the ID laws are because they are in favor of voter fraud, which will allow them to steal elections by having votes from dead persons (think Chicago) and other who should not be casting a vote, go in the plus column for the Dem candidate. Yes, it will take votes away from Democrats, because those votes would have been fraudulently cast, and apparently, they do not believe that they can win the election fair and square. ID laws do not disenfranchise voters, they only level the playing field to where it should be.

Besides, if a person is not responsible enough to get an easily-obtainable ID to prove who they are, then they are not responsible enough to vote in an election that determines the course our nation will take, either. Very common sense.

          • Dennis

Of course this isnt about discouraging people from voting. Are you kidding me? Having a simple picture i.d. makes perfect sense and thos behind trying to stop or block this want voter fraud, period end of story.Which is easy when i.d. isnt required.Anybody who doesnt see this is either ignorant or part of the system.

  • Dr Bob

Let us stop and think about the current administration and DNCs goals for the United States. Are you better off today then you were 3 years ago? Before you answer consider your complete mind, body, spirit (religion) and emotions. If the current administration is re-elected there will be NO city of the hill since China will own the hill. If you think that Obama is just having a war with the Catholics what happens after that, with other religions, in the next four years.

All churches are a business, thus in need of a business license. The next Obama step is to tax every income from every business including churches. Could your church be able to pay that tax and still be around – I doubt it. Churches of all religions are being closed all the time because they cannot financially handle the cost of running the church business. Where would your church membership meet after the building closes?

If this happens we will be forced to turn to small group Bible Studies in homes, probably done in secret, possibly passwords like in New Teatament times when "fish" Greek word for "fish" an acrostic, Jesus, God's Son, Savior!

    • daves

I don't think President Obama is attacking the Catholics and I think policies to help the poor are much more noble than policies to protect the wealthy.

      • Bobseeks

Daves: You mean the policies which keep the poor in perpetual poverty, which enslave them to the democrat party, which destroy what little good is in them, which are designed to turn them into mindless, vote producing cattle? You mean those "noble" policies, daves? Also, if you don't believe that satan's number son isn't attacking Christians, you are truly a moron (we already knew that).

      • pcsrocky

What do you call the HHS mandate if NOT an attack on Catholics? It was the Catholic Church and institutions that have been singled out. How is that NOT an attack on Catholics? They mandate SPECIFICALLY says CATHOLIC institutions. How is that NOT an attack on Catholics? NO other religion is mentioned only CATHOLIC. How is that NOT an attack on Catholics?

        • daves

The mandate says that churches are exempt. It says all insurance companies have to offer birth control as a service without a copay.

          What am I missing?

      • pcsrocky

Further, check into the charitable organizations. How many of those institutions were started by Catholics? How many of those charitable institutions are being run or supported primarily by Catholics?

What would happen to health care if all of the Catholic based hospitals in the country ONLY accepted patients and emergencies dealing with Catholics? Many people would die and many more would have to travel many miles to get health care!

  • Delmer C. Woisme

My Dear Linda F: Haven't you read about Abraham and the burning bush, the bush that was burning but wasn't consumed? What is it you think God can't do?

    • msjallen

Delmer, I do believe it was Moses and the burning bush.
Exodus 3:2-3 The angel of the LORD appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed. So Moses said, “I must turn aside now and see this marvelous sight, why the bush is not burned up.”

everyone is always beating up on christians for the way things are in this world. i think it's time to lay the blame squarely where it should rest – on satan and those that follow him. that's why Jesus is returning to take back control of the earth, reign for a thousand years then complete the great white throne judgment where tens of billions will be judged and hurled to their final eternal abode. then Jesus will create a new heaven and earth where no sin will ever be seen or heard there. and let's stop blaming christians for everything. remember nothing that was created was created without Jesus. further Jesus said we're not of this world or else we would take over and kick some butt and win and implement His Lordship by force. the new earth is the eternal inheritance for christians besides so much more that eye has not seen, nor has ear heard, neither has entered into the heart of man the things that God has prepared for those who are the called according to His Word.

    • msjallen

As goes the believer, so goes the nation.
2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by MY name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
II Peter 3:8… but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
Jer 17:5 Thus says the LORD," Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind and makes flesh his strength, and whose heart turns away from the LORD

People go from Spiritual Faith to great courage, from great courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, and from dependence back to bondage.
Sad to say that there are very few pastors who are willing to teach the truth for fear they will lose their congregation. Too many churches produce zombies of programism, entertainment and emotionalism that they don't know what the Bible teaches. This is why social-ism and communism has been able to take over the thinking of our nation.
Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

The only light America ever had or any man ever had is Jesus the Light of the world.
    John 1
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

As someone who has been "born again" after many years of spiritual warfare with God (and his Son), I still have problems with organized Christian sects trying to make everyone feel guilty all the time with sin and criticism. Ok, we get it! We are all sinners but we don't all deserve to be blamed for the political situation the world and America faces today. After all, WHAT exactly do you think we could have done about Obama the anti-Christ?
