The New School Choice Agenda

When Cheryl Burke first walked into the dark lobby of Chimborazo Elementary School, where she had just been appointed principal, she noted the distinct smell of urine. Outside, the playground was littered with "40s," large empty beer bottles, and crack cocaine was stashed in one of the bathrooms. "I just cried," says Burke, recalling that day in 1996.

Sixteen years later, the brightly lit lobby sports two armchairs and a coffee table. Where black asphalt once surrounded the buildings, there is now green grass. Sterile white cinder-block hallways now vibrate with colorful stripes of paint. Over the years, "Miz Burke," as she is known to staff, parents, and students alike, convinced the local faith community to pray for the school, raise funds, and counsel and tutor students. Chimborazo's scores on the state Standard of Learning exam have climbed, and now the number of students declared "proficient" in math and reading hovers around 60 percent.

Still, 88 percent of Chimborazo's students are so poor they receive free or reduced-price lunches; with that poverty comes a litany of challenges for the PK-5 school. As bright and beautiful as Burke has made it, Chimborazo reflects its local community, with all its hurts and all its possibilities.

Many Americans, including many Christians, do not consider urban schools like Chimborazo good enough for their children. Despite federal programs such as George Bush's No Child Left Behind and the Obama administration's Race to the Top, American students still struggle to achieve basic academic goals. The nonpartisan Broad Foundation for Education reports that 68 percent of American 8th graders can't read at their grade level, and most will never catch up. Nationally, 70 percent of students graduate from high school, and only 50 percent of African American and Latino students graduate on time.

The only hope for America is to remove our children from the evil empire of the lieberal/atheists that we call our public school system. It is time to realize that the lieberal/atheist/union thugs who run the public schools have nothing but hate for everything that is good and therefore, endeavor to remove all moral truth from the curriculum while replacing said truth with the lies and myths of the lieberal/atheists. The fruits of decades of allowing this to happen are seen in our society in the sloth, parasitism, violence, sexual immorality, drug abuse, and general moral poverty that is becoming the trademark of American culture. It is time to put an end to public (lieberal/atheist) mis-education and replace it with Christ-based truth.

  • Myrtlelinder

Thank GOD there are still a few places left in our land where the WORD OF GOD, REMAINS. Obam's "RACE TO THE TOP" sounds, good, if "THE TOP IS IN THE RIGHT PLACE." The right place is not, "GIVE THE COUNTRY TO MUSLIM ISLAMISTS, THE TOP IS WITH GOD AS OUR LEADER AND MASTER.'

    • lurl

Which word is the right word. We much prefer President Obama's words and wisdom compared to someone who keeps their nose stuck in their errant bible.

  • Chris P

You are so obsessed and paranoid with no facts to back anything you say – it's truly silly. Most public schools are run by the PUBLIC. The RELIGIOUS PUBLIC that deny evolution and think there is a god running the show.

Most people in America claim to be Christians and certainly not atheists or liberals.

Your comment is completely stupid – it is you Christians who haven't stepped up to the plate. YOU don't bring your children up right – you live in a haze of ignorance and denial. Worried about which car to drive to church and which clothes to wear to impress the others.

There are no gods. It's made up tripe that you have failed to show any factual support for.

    • MyrtleLinder

Chris, why do these Christian posts, bother you, so much. Usually, when I don't like one, i either go pass to the next one or vote negative. There has to be a reason and I would like to know what it is, so that I can understand you a little better. I mean, if you don't want better for your children, that is your business, but I want better for your children and for my children. This is the Christian way.

      • Bobseeks

Why would you want to understand an ignorant, lying, blasphemer?

    • Bobseeks

Where is your "proof" that there is no GOD, dilbert? By the way, everything I have said is provable by looking at the curriculum of the schools and the product trhe schools turn out – lying, ignorant, immoral, atheists like you, dilbert.

      • Myrtle

Because, he badly needs help, to understand what is causing his negative thoughts. He cannot be helped by humans without someone being able to understand where this hate is coming from..

        • Bobseeks

It is arrogant to believe that dilbert can be helped by any human. The fact is he can be helped only by GOD, are you GOD myrtle? By the way, his hate comes from his unholy fear of GOD and only the SDpirt can bring him freedom from that hate. Stop playing GOD myrtle.

          • Myrtlelinder

Actually,Bob…. I meant that all Christians who read and write these comments, not just me or you. You need not get needled because I spoke the truth and I believe that you have no intention in doing, as JESUS commended us, to witness and if they don't want to hear leave, wiping the dust our feet.

Do I think I am GOD? No, I am a sinner, like he said I am and like your are. If you say you have no sin, you lie, and the truth is not in you!! Quote from the Bible. If you want the scripture, I will look it up for you.

Oh, by the way, you nor I can help anyone, except through JESUS CHRIST. I am surprised that you have this attitude, about someone being interested in helping anyone to find JESUS. I was so sure you were a Christian and would be interested, also.

Few people who do not know HIM, want to know HIM. Once in a while, you can help someone find the way if you really try and ask JESUS, to show you the way. If nobody reaches out, they may remain lost forever. It makes a big difference to know there is someone in the world who cares. You never make a mistake in letting someone know you care.

WE ARE NOT THE JUDGES AND WILL BE JUDGED WITH THE SAME WE USE TO JUDGE OTHERS, SO WE NEED TO BE CAREFUL AN REACH OUT OT OTHERS , NOT SHOVE THEM BACK, FURTHER INTO SIN. WE CAN DO THAT BY USING RIDICULE.

          • Bobseeks

We do not help people, it is the utmost arrogence to believe that we bring people to Christ because Christ decided his fate before either of us was born. Chris has heard the Gospel, his lies have been pointed out, it is now up to GOD to either harvest him or dispose of him as He sees fit. My responses to Chris are in reaction to his blaspheming GOD, not with the intent to "save" him because that is not your job nor is it mine.

    • M Green

Your constant blind eye to history is astounding. HOWEVER, you make some good points. We SHOULD be trying to undo the damage Madeline Murray Ohara did in the 50s and bring back prayer in school. We should go back to teaching the Bible in the schools. Kids didn't bring guns to school back then. BUT, you wouldn't like that, would you? But there's a gazillion lawsuits that get in our way of teaching our kids the Bible in a public setting. You need to stop playing both sides of the coin here, Chris. You sound almost insane.

      • Bobseeks

To what history are you referring? Your comment makes no sense without some explanation.

      • Bobseeks

Sorry, M Green, I did a myrtle and misunderstood your post. You are right on about dilbert, I mean Chris.

      • bighoss

You give Ms. O'Hair (note CORRECT spelling) credit for more than she actually did. Your eyes vision seems also to be a bit compromised as to the real story. The matter of school prayer had already been decided in the courts before she got active on that scene:

"Her son William later indicated that there were several similar cases before the Supreme Court at the same time, and her case with Schempp's simply happened to be decided first. Prayer in schools other than Bible-readings had already been ended in 1962 by the Court's ruling in Engel v. Vitale." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madalyn_Murray_O&#03….

There is a wide array of religious observances and activities that are permissible in the public school system under the Constitution and laws of this nation and its member states. Get yourself educated. Here is a good place to start. http://www.aclu.org/religion-belief/joint-stateme

The Bible can be taught in public schools–taught as the great literature it is, but it can not, and should not be taught as it would be in some sectarian religious organization. History and literature-OKAY. Doctrine–Uh-Uh!

        • bighoss

P.S. You also misspelled her first name; it is "Madalyn". And her legal activist activities related to religion in the public schools occurred in the 1960s, not the 1950s.Next time you post, you really should get some knowledgeable person to review your material before you put it on the forum. When so much of what you post is so easily provable as wrong, it casts doubt on your entire outburst!

    • petroskhan1262

"…you live in a haze of ignorance and denial."

Really? I guess it's SO much more realistic to swallow that load of nonsense known as evolution, right? Yeah, that's certainly passed the test of the scientific method.

And the Bible has infinitely more proof of its claims than Darwin ever dreamed he could find in his wildest fantasies.

  • Chris P

Wow – what an incoherent piece of ranting drivel.

    • Myrtlelinder

Rave on, Chris, we hear you, but more important, GOD reads your heart, you cannot hide from HIM!!!

      • lurl

You are so full of nonsense myrtle the turtle.
I don't know why they let you have a computer in your rest home. Do you have Medicare there? Medicaid?
        Social Security? Bet you do.

    • Bobseeks

Coming from the master of incoherent ranting (and dishonest, deluded, and just plain stupid) drivel; what a sick joke you are dilbert.

      • petroskhan1262

I must strenuously object to him being called Dilbert. I think Dilbert is funny, and I enjoy that comic very much. Crispy is not funny…nor enjoyable. :P

    • M Green

This from a habitually incoherent rambler.

    • lurl

      So Chris
      What else is new?

  • Bobseeks

Hey everyone: Don't forget to wish your favorite atheist a "Happy Atheists Day (fka April Fools Day)" tomorrow.

    • petroskhan1262

Ah, thanks for the reminder. Forgot it was their holiday.

    • lurl

Everyday is a great day for an Atheist. Each is a new day a wonderful day and any-day is good for a celebration.

Only the Lord Jesus Christ can change the lives of those who believe in Him as their savior. God made Him who had no sin to be sin as a substitute for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:21)
He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. (1 Peter 2:24)
Whosoever believes in the Son has eternal life; but whosoever rejects the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him. (John 3:36)

Schools teach academics; home and churches are to teach the Word of God.

"Whosoever believes in the Son has eternal life; but whosoever rejects the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him. (John 3:36) "

Dispensational Gnostic messalien "taught by special teachers who know the original languages" :) Wonder if those teachers of yours ever stumbled on the idea that there is no "Whosoever" in John 3:36 as there is no in John 3:16.
What it is the is: "ο πιστευων" which really means "one believing" or "that one who believes"…

      • petroskhan1262

Interesting. The translation I most frequently use has this:

"He who believes in the Son has life that is eternal, and he who does not obey the Son will not see life, rather the wrath of YAHWEH will rise up against him."

  • Grant

Bless her for making a 'positive change'. Now isn't this what is called 'CHANGE'…helloooo

  • Grant

Covering good over evil, wow, way to go!

  • lurl

Those of us who are Atheists want to wish all of you a very happy and holy Astarte week.
Time for you to get your bunny's out and don't forget to color your Pagan eggs in remembrance of her holiday.
Time to bring blooming flowers into your homes and don't forget those special dinners.
Don't get caught up in the myths of the xian season here….they just stole the whole thing from the Pagan communities.
