Bishop's linking Obama to Hitler enrages Notre Dame profs

More than a hundred University of Notre Dame professors have demanded that Illinois Bishop Daniel Jenky renounce comments he made criticizing President Barack Obama's stance on religious liberty that compared him to dictators Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin.

"Jenky's comments demonstrate ignorance of history, insensitivity to victims of genocide and absence of judgment," said the letter addressed this week to the leadership of the renowned Catholic university in Indiana and signed by 131 professors from various fields.

The letter urged the school to distance itself from Jenky's "incendiary statement," and called for Jenky, 65, a Notre Dame graduate who has led a Catholic diocese in Peoria, Illinois, since 2002, to "renounce loudly and publicly this destructive analogy" – or resign from the university's Board of Fellows and board of trustees.

Jenky, along with other U.S. Catholic bishops and social conservatives, condemned the Obama administration's requirement that church-affiliated institutions provide insurance that covers contraception.

But his April 14 homily singled out Obama and the Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate, saying "The Church will survive … the calculated disdain of the President of the United States … and of the current (Democratic) majority of the federal Senate."

Who cares what the Notre Dame profs think. They are no better than anyone else. Notre Dame is a "Catholic in name only university," and should loose it's tax exempt status and the support of the Catholic community. Cloaking it's liberal leanings under the guise of the Catholic faith is no longer viable. The invitation to the abortion loving Obama made that painfully clear. I am a Catholic with 5 children in Catholic middle/high schools, and there was a time that I would have entertained sending my children there. I am grateful that I was able to see the true colors of this institution before I might have made that mistake!

Actually, the Bishop's comments are quite on the money. Hitler seduced the German church authorities by telling them 'Germany was the last bastion of Christiany against bolshevism' left in Europe. Because the church leaders were afraid of what was going on in Russia, they agreed with Hitler. Once Hitler had cemented his power in Germany and turned gainst the Jews, the church leaders who defied him wound up in the death camps. Many of them died in Dauchau and other camps because they refused to condone what the Nazis were doing the Jews.

Every educational institution in this Country is filled with "liberal" profs and has been for decades upon decades. The teaching of values and spirtual insight is the job of the parents and the Community they live in. It's a good contrast for the students to learn from, after all true wisdom comes from diversity and the ability to learn the lessons that thorough evaluation of that contrast. Books and lecture have their purpose and God given minds perfect the learning process into something usable not only in this life but also in the next.
