Conservative Catholics blast Sebelius speech at Georgetown

Last month liberal Catholics were upset over House Republican budget chief Paul Ryan using a Georgetown University platform to defend his hard-line fiscal plan as a natural outgrowth of his Catholic faith. Dozens of Georgetown faculty and administrators wrote a letter welcoming Ryan but blasting his understanding of Catholic teaching and asking him to explain his views during his talk at the university's Public Policy Institute.

Now it is the conservatives' turn: The flagship Jesuit university has announced that Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, a Catholic who has angered conservatives and bishops for overseeing the Obama administration's contraception insurance mandate and other controversial policies, will address the policy institute's graduating class at commencement on May 18.

"The left-liberals who run the show at Georgetown have found a way to signal to the world that the nation's oldest Catholic, and most famous Jesuit, university stands with the Obama administration in its war … against the Catholic bishops and others who oppose the HHS mandate as a violation of religious freedom and the rights of conscience," fumed Robert P. George, a legal scholar at Princeton University and a conservative Catholic with close ties to Republican causes.

Catholics are very liberal, if they support Obama and his policies the will reap what they sow. How can they complain about Obama forcing them to pay for contraceptives when they are the people who put him in power.

    • Alex

Correcto-mundo! I'm a former Catholic because of that and the proliferation of pedophilia-practicing priests, who the Vatican is generally loathe to punish.

      • daves

I am sure that a hundred years ago many religions were upset about giving women the right to vote and thought it violated their religious freedom. They need to get over this contraception thing. It does not require them to do anything they do not want to. It just requires insurance companies to provide contraception to their customers.

Since the Catholics oppose this so much, I would like to see them kick every male or female member of the church who has ever used contraception, out of the church. Their pews would be mostly empty.

I agree with you about the 2nd paragraph.

Per the 1st though, it is no business of any government to mandate what a company should do. Period.

What if the company wanted to whip their employees? Or brand them with a company logo? Or kill them for industrial spying? Can the government mandate that is not acceptable?

          • Anita

People can deem this unacceptable. They can quit, boycott them, and refuse to support them in anyway what so ever. Come on, don't you think it's time that we each take responsiblity for ourselves and stop relying on Big Brother. After all we all know that when Big Brother gets involved in a situation it eventually fails. Look at all of the so called social programs they stuck their noses in. Name one that is successful. With this administration they are destroying the one thing Big Brother did do good in, our Military. This administration is destroying it step by step.

daves, no one is saying that people cannot use contraceptives if they choose. The problem is the Federal Government contraceptive insurance mandate. In other words, keep government out of the equation altogether.

        • oakhollow8

Who exactly do you think the insurance companies get their money from to provide services?

        • myth buster

How dare you suggest that we should deny the repentant the ability to be reinstated? How dare you suggest that there are some sins that cannot be covered by the blood of Christ (besides final impenitence)? What are you, a Donatist?

      • Katie

This is Satan's way to pull you away from God…….don't let him win……there are pedophiles everywhere including our schools where are children spend the majority of their day. There are bad people everywhere including the church. What better place for Satan to do his evil…….they will all atone and face God for their punishment. Don't let Satan win the battle. God Bless You All!!

Unfortunately there are several "anti-catholic catholics". Miss Sebelius is one of them, as same as Vice-President Biden, Kennedy's clan and Nancy Pelosi. As you know there are many enemies outside the Catholic Church, we don't need any inside the Catholic Church.

This practicing Catholic didn't vote for the commander-in-cheat. His policies are representative of the culture of death. Look at what is happening to jobs, abortions, gas prices, businesses, the housing market. . . .it's time to call the cafeteria catholics on the carpet, Biden, Pelosi, Sebelius, just to name a few, along with the universities that do not follow the Church's teachings. . . .why do they want to identify with the Catholic Church unless it is to try to bring her down. . .the gates of heII shall not prevail.

  • pcsrocky

Ms. Sebelius calling herself Catholic is a contradiction, same for VP Biden, Kennedy's, N. Pelosi and so on down the line. They keep saying they are Catholic and yet they don't live, act or talk like most of the Catholics I know. We basically ask what religion they actually are because it is nothing like the Catholic religion we grew up learning!

  • Alice

They are Catholic in name only. God knows what they really are. Thou shall not kill says it all.

  • Gene

You got to be kidding me about Georgetown and being anti Vatican teaching . The Jebbies have been the guardian of the Pope for centuries. I graduated from a Jesuit University and the article doesn't sound like a Jebbie philosphy with Sebelius preaching her anti-Catholic political job saving stance. The Jebbies are radical but they also maintain the faith. Too many Jebbies have died for their faith. Life needs to be respected either before or after birth.

    • Steve03

"Life needs to be respected either before or after birth." We have to choose?

The Pharasees pretended to be very pious and concerned…but they too had a hidden agenda…not hidden however from The Lord!

  • DockyWocky

    Uh! Fellows.

Allowing Sebelius a pulpit was the second mistake.

  • Booko_D_Dead

My parish priest calls these liberal fools as "cafeteria catholics". The pick and choose what they want to believe in or follow.
