Hugo Chavez turns to Christianity during cancer struggle

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has spent much of his career praising the socialist ideas of famed atheists such as Karl Marx and Fidel Castro. Now in the thick of a prolonged battle against cancer, however, the leftist leader is drawing inspiration more than ever from a spiritual leader: Jesus Christ.

Chavez has been praying for divine intervention during increasingly infrequent appearances on television, holding up a crucifix while vowing to overcome his illness. He says living with cancer has made him “more Christian,” talk that has coincided with speculation by some Venezuelans that cancer might cut short his bid for re-election in October.

Chavez’s voice cracked with emotion as he bade farewell to aides and supporters in Caracas on April 30 before leaving for what he said would be his final round of cancer treatment in Cuba.

“I’m sure our Christ will do it again, continuing making the miracle,” Chavez said as he raised his cross to his lips and kissed it, prompting applause from an audience of aides.

Take heed all of you socialist, communist, unbelievers. When the end is near you all call on Christ. Just remember this when you do this are you sincere or are you just trying to con God. Remember this, God knows better than us what is in our hearts. Personally, I hope you have a long, slow, painful death you murdering b–tard. But I am not like my forgiving God. But again, I don't pretend to be God. I am just human.

    • PTTA

It is never to late to accept Jesus as your Savior. But don't just say it, mean it with all you have. The Lord knows what you are, what you think, and what you will do in the future. He can not be fooled.

      • Guest

When I die, I would rather have gone through life believing there is God, than die an atheist and find out He is real. I was told many years ago that we will be amazed at who we will see in heaven.

I am of the belief a person can go through life as an absolutely horrid person, denying God etc. and on their death bed come to the reaization they were wrong, God does exist and be PERFECTLY contrite for their sins and God will forgive them – because He is a merciful God.

        • daves

Believing just to avoid hell is not very sincere.

          • Disgusted

You don't really know that's what he's doing. It could be real. I'm not counting on it, but I pray it is real. My prayers are that God will reach whoever He can. He knows who they are.

          • Mexseiko

Buy his fruits he shall be known. His political mentor and model has been Fidel Castro, an Atheist, who used a cause to live as a king. He owned everything in Cuba and selected the best mansions in the island to make them his residences. Hugo's family live it up while the people suffer. Yachts, fancy watches, clubbing, traveling, etc. If repented and converted, he no longer will the desire to live as a billionaire on the backs of Venezuelan misery.

      • Debbie

        AMEN!!!!!!

      • gigi

We always know, the barbarians, athiest and sinners that didn't believe in God always turn to him when they're near the end of their life. I pray he means it and not only turn his life around, but let his people go and live in peace.

        • daves

Do you think Hugo Chavez was an atheist?

          • mesaman

            yes

      • CryingSoftly

If he survives I think we will see how sincere Hugo is by what he does regarding religion in his country. It will be interesting to watch.

        • evermyrtle

Let us pray for him that he will remain true to GOD and HIS SON, because there will be many temptations to pull him away from GOD. Satan will be working overtime to get him back. He cannot do it alone!!

    • Linda F.

Be careful what you wish for, Anita. It might come back on you a thousand fold.

      • Ann

Amen. Look at the theif on the cross.Jesus told him he woyld see him in heaven,.while.the other theif ranted. This their acceptd that JEsus was his savior. JEsus tells of the parable of the workers to show he treats those that come late the same as those who were there all day. GOd forgives

    • blackhawk

THERE ARE NO ATHIESTS IN FOXHOLES.

Mat 6:14 For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
Mat 6:15 But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

    • Laksman

You surely have unforgiveness in your heart and in your words. From what you have written you seem to be more ignorant than Hugo Chavez. We are all humans including atheists, but IF you truly believe in Jesus He has commanded you to forgive. But your unforgiveness makes you worse than Hugo Chavez. You come under the category of unbelievers. None of us can take the place of God. Jesus said "Love your enemies and forgive those who sin against us. Read 1 Corinthians 13 where God says "LOVE" IS THE MOST ABIDING GRACE.

  • Patrick Henry

He even satan knows that GOD is supreme and that JESUS is the son of GOD!!!!

    • Dark_Archer

all atheists turn to God in their final hours may God have mercy on your soul chavez ….and take you into his arms and SQUEZE THE LIVING BREATH FROM YOUR BLACKENED SOUL AND CAST YOU INTO HELLS FIRES …AMEN

      • Guy

If you claim to be a child of God and our saviour Jesus Christ our saviour you should not feel this way all you should be doing is Praying for him and let our Savior do all the judging for that is his job not ours MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON US ALL

      • Paul Walker

I sure hope you are not a Christian. Christ is LOVE and you display none. I pray God's mercy on YOUR soul.

      • msjallen

The only sin that will send someone to hell is unbelief. Sin is not the issue in salvation. Jesus Christ is the issue because of the work He did for us on the cross. Since we can't pray to God the Father until after salvation, we can't repent, or give up things or ask forgiveness to be saved; we can only believe by faith that He died for our sins to have eternal life with Him.
John 3:36 Whosoever believes in the Son has eternal life; but whosoever rejects the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.
Eph 2:8-9 For you have been saved by GRACE in the past with the result that you continue to be saved forever through faith; and this salvation is not from yourselves, it is a gift of God; not by works, that no one may boast.
Acts 16:31 They said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved…”

        • myth buster

Sin most certainly is an issue. Someone who professes Christ but continues to sin flagrantly and deliberately is more detestable to Christ than an unbeliever (Revelation 3:16). The grace of God is beyond measure, but it must NEVER be treated as a license to sin, for doing so spits on Christ on the Cross, grieves the Holy Spirit, and undermines the Church before unbelievers, giving them reason to accuse us all of hypocrisy.

          • Robert WAldron

            Amen!!

      • Disgusted

Whoa, there, fella. This is the kind of judgement that we have no right to make. God knows who belongs with Him and who belongs in Hell. Watch it, now, watch it. We'll see how he acts after he's gotten well, if he gets well.

All atheists do NOT turn to God in their final hours, by the way.

      • myth buster

"Forgive us our trespasses AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US."

    • Robert Waldron

I noticed that you never capitalized Son.Jesus is equal with God and will judge the world.
Its called the judgement seat. We Christians have a triune GOD.God the Father,God the Son, and God the Holt Spirit!

  • Scarface

Hugo: If God does grant you more time, will you profess his greatness? Will you shout out to all the corners of the earth that he is Emanuel? Will you finally understand that it's not about politics or societal manipulation, but it is about LOVE!

    • JoJo

No, he'll use the extra time to torture and kill more people and justify it by telling the world he was simply introducing them to Jesus and sending them to the glory of God.

  • Evermyrtle

The time for confessing and repenting or working for GOD is short! We are in the last days. It is time that we confess and repent before we no longer have that opportunity. When JESUS COMES, THAT WILL BE TOO LATE. ACCEPT ALL OF HIS WONDERFUL BLESSING AND ETERNAL LIFE WITH HIM, RIGHT AWAY!!! HE IS READY TO ACCEPT YOU AS SOON AS YOU ARE READY TO ASK FOR IT.

  • cHARLES

And what if HE does save your life Hugo——-will you have earned humility, and offer thanks every day you live??? Would you preach His Greatness====not yours?? ( If so, maybe miracles do happen!!!)

    • Evermyrtle

It seems like many times someone who has led a life of anti-GOD practices make better Christians than people who have been Christians all of their lives, because they can really see how awful the other side is. while Christians only imagine. They can really see how important it is to love and accept GOD, they can understand the good and the evil first hand. I will pray for this man that he can get it all straightened out. Right now he is a baby Christian and still groping for the truth. He will have a lot of work to do, as he realizes along the way the difference and the changes he has to make. We all who have learned about him should pray for him and not mock him and scoff at him. Only he himself knows how sincere he is. We can help him or we can drive him away from GOD, because he is a a very vulnerable stage of his acceptance of GOD and JESUS CHRIST. ANYBODY WHO HAS NOT BEEN THERE, DON'T JUDGE JUST PRAY.

    • Robert Waldron

None of us is worthy. We are save by grace not by works! No one will be able to say to a triune God "Look at what I have done."
We have all sinnned and came short of Gods glory!

  • http://www.kissmydonkeymusic.com JerryM

Comment I've made many times on these blogs:
As an atheist grows older and approaches the end of their life, I was wondering if they ever fear that there may be a GOD. After death will be too late for them to learn the truth.
Atheist…Go ahead, mock GOD but you had better be right. It's not going to be much fun after you die and you stand in judgment before God.

  • Norma

Only God is able to heal him and further his political career. If he makes a mockery of God, I imagine that God will take care of him good and proper, so he better not walk on dangerous ground. That would be the worst he could do for his soul's sake.

  • Don

God will not be mocked. I hope Chavez is sincere , but God will not here his prayers unless he first repents and then turns from hs evil ways.

  • UPNYTH

I still question that Hugo a real born-again. He is not because if you read the fine line, everyone. He "increased more Christian" and held a Catholic Crucifix and kissed it. No, not to my eyes. This could be a set up as well because politicans are trying to paint pictures that they are "Christians" to make us Christians who are mostly Conservatives feel sorry for socialists, communists, athiests, etc. So, I do not find this is true. It is all a joke. So, please everyone WAKE UP! This is a joke. Cancer is real for him, but he is trying to die as a "Saint" Can not do that if you are so against God and socialize a country. So, therefore, I will only pray for Hugo the same with all dictators to surrender their lives and FREE their countries of socialism! Actions speak louder than words! So, therefore, he needs to allow that. Maybe that is why both Fidel and Hugo are dying because they do not accept Christ and because they did not give their countries freedom!

    • Tom

I had similar thoughts- kissing a cross doesn't make one Christian…. If he truly is now a Christian, true repentance will be seen in how he operates- His policies will totally change- his friendship with Iran will change, abuse of people,… I will wait to see if any of these things happen before I call him a Christian.

      Romans 10:9.

    • Evermyrtle

When you turn to GOD from a life of evil, it does not mean you will be perfect and make no mistakes. IF he is earnest, and it is not our place to decide if he is earnest or not, GOD will overlook his mistakes, he is not like us, he will forgive him AS LONG AS HE SEEKS TO FIND AND DO WHAT GOD EXPECTS HIM OT DO. and with or without our help,
GOD will lead him into HIS way, the way that HE will have him to go. It is up to us to decide if we will help him and other people who are seeking.or will we slap them down every they make a mistake and try to crawl back up.

  • Sharon

I pray this is so!! But we will know them by their fruits as Paul was changed we must see Chavaz change Christ will ask no less of him he will need to prove his faith and testimony,as he will be asked to stand for Christ and His will and may have to laid down his life for Christ! Many will say LORD LORD BUT HE WILL SAY DEPART FOR I NEVER KNEW YOU, MY SHEEP HEAR MY VOICE AND FOLLOW ME!!!

    • gena

If the man accepts Jesus on his deathbed, God will be happy, as will be the angels. God doesn't have the same set of rules that people have that one has to prove their love of Him. He knows their every thought. Now Chavez might need to do all that to prove to YOU that he has sincerely repented, but God will know if he is sincere from the moment Chavez does truly repent, if he does. The only unforgivable sin is to die without accepting Christ's salvation. You have up to that last breath, as does Chavez.

      • Evermyrtle

Do yo know of any scripture that backs up deathbed confessions? I have heard of deathbed confessions all of my life and cannot remember any scripture backing that up. I am not critizing, I am seeking.

        • Wise old guy

How about, "ask and you shall receive"? It doesn't say, "Ask BEFORE your deathbed and you shall receive". Asking for forgiveness, ANYTIME , is fine with our loving God and father.

          • Evermyrtle

Mockery is unbecoming behavior of a Christian.

Actually, Menasseh was king of Judah, and his repentance is recorded in Chronicles.

The criminal on the cross next to Jesus was forgiven while he was dying, and Scripture explicitly commands presbyters to go to sick believers and anoint them so their sins will be forgiven.

Indeed, I had forgotten that one, Thanks for reminding me. A wonderful example!!

        • brojimmy

I would say that the thief on the cross who expressed his faith to our Savior and was accepted by Him certainly is the example you seek. (Luke 23:42 NIV) Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."
43 ) Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."

          • Evermyrtle

Obama is not ready. Obama may not ever be ready. The draw of power, control and wealth is Obama's current God. Unless he repents his blasphemous ways, he is lost.

      • keyboardshark

Obama may not be ready now, but who knows? While I agree with practically nothing that Obama has done or said to date, our job as Christians is to pray for him, as we would any ruler who holds office, that God would open his eyes to the truth, and that he would then repent and believe.

        "I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty."
        I Timothy 2:1-2

On the other hand, I also see nothing unscriptural with praying that he does not get re-elected, either. God certainly cannot be pleased with his track record as President, so we could not in good conscience desire another 4 years of the same.

        • danc1957

God also sets up kings and rulers and also takes them down, all to either bless a nation or in judgement.
Unfortunately I believe the latter is true for the U.S.A.

  • http://www.believeroftheWAY.com believeroftheWAY

We should all rejoice at the drawing that the FATHER does in the life of any person. How anyone is brought to HIM is HIS work, not ours. Can we really fathom that the temporary curse of cancer can bring an eternal gift of salvation? GOD knows exactly what every person needs to direct them to HIMSELF. I praise GOD for every blessing HE gives and pray for Hugo Chavez, with the hope that HE truly comes to know the real JESUS and gathers all the riches that HE offers with HIS gift of redemptive grace. Thank you JESUS for your unlimited love for all of us sinners.

    • gena

I agree with everything you said. God's will be done. I don't think it is the place of any of us to second guess what is going on or to say we will believe it if… If Chavez accepts Christ and Christ is able to take him out of the grasp of Satan, we should all rejoice and not place our demands or conditions on anything involved with it. I think that that is perhaps why Heaven is not a democracy, He doesn't need our advice and doesn't need to take our orders. He DOES know so much more than any of us, and He is in control. Even if the man only accepts Christ on his deathbed, we should rejoice in the fact of his salvation, as the angels in heaven with rejoice. One lost soul snatched from Satan at the last moment.

  • Moshe ben David

Chavez can mention Jesus Christ all he wants, and genuflect, kiss the cross, say all kind of utterances, but unless he repents and becomes a christian, it's all in vain. Just going through the motions isn't christian whatsoever. Now if he changes remarkably in an orthodox christian manner, disavows his communist totalitarian leadership and advocates freedom from all that he has instituted and advocated…and is truly repentant and follows Christ's commands, then it would be an entirely different result. It would be amazing to the world indeed, if he were to become a christian.

    • Moshe ben David

It would also be quite the pronouncement if Obama would do the same. He goes through the motions too, but in his heart he is just another Muslim, willing to lie in order to advocate for Islam. He has no christian values and mocks Christ with his actions. It's perfectly acceptable for a Muslim to lie in order to curry favor for Islam.

      • Wise old guy

Obama is not Christian. Obama is Muslim. Obama is not American. Obama is Marxist. Obama, forget about this life, ….. it means nothing. Now, the next life,….. son, you be in deep doo doo!

Stop repeating this garbage. There are no gods and the only thing that will save Chavez is science. Why did "God" give him cancer in the first place? Why did god invent cancer?

Gods are all too silly for words. Grow up.

      • petroskhan1262

Yes, far more rational to believe that everything came from nothing, life came from lifelessness, and complexity rises from simplicity.

That's not silly, and far more grown up.

And while God did create everything, if you would read the Bible (you know, that book you keep bashing?) you would find that everything was fine (as in "and it was good") when He created it. Sin (along with evil and death) entered the world through the work of Satan. You are living breathing proof of the truth of that old saying, "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he doesn't exist."

      • myth buster

When you turn your back on monkey boy from Iran and send his missiles back then and only then i will believe any statement of faith you might have.
Until then you will face the wrath of the Holy of Holies.

    • gena

Chavez doesn't have to answer to you, Gdrake, but to God. God will know if he is sincere and Chavez doesn't have to prove anything to anyone on earth for God to know and to accept him if he is sincere. That is why in the Bible it says some of the last will be first and some of the first will be last. If Chavez accepts Jesus, even on his deathbed, and has the gratitude he should have, God will welcome him with open arms. I believe it says the angels in heaven rejoice even more greatly when someone who appeared to be lost is found. We should all also rejoice with Christ if He is able to snatch Chavez out of Satan's grasp, even if it on Chavez's dying breath. Life is much more about the spiritual warfare going on around us that we don't always see or notice than the earthly things that pass into nothing shortly in God's time. Those things are a distraction to the real meaning of why we are here and why God had to send His Son for our salvation. So I hope and pray for Chavez to repent and accept Jesus, and if it is God's will, then more power if He allows him to be cured.

      • Evermyrtle

You are right Gena. Our problem, many times as Christians we think we have the right to judge others. I often wonder if we think GOD needs help in HIS WORK of doing the judging. We can quit our worrying about that, HE knows exactly what HE is dong and needs no help. HE has everything i hand.

      • Gdrake

I am stupid enough to think that he has to answer to me and I am allowed to express my opinion of his actions and his words. God will judge his heart but action speaks louder then words. I believe I have the right to my own opinion as you do yours

        • Evermyrte

HE will be just as merciful to us as we make our way and make our mistakes and sins as we are to others along their way, if we consider and are willing to help instead of putting them down. HE may say to us "You are a good and faithful servant", or HE may say, "Depart from me, I never knew you." He will forgive many sins if we are willing to forgive. HE WILL NOT SAVE BECAUSE WE ARE GOOD, HE WILL SAVE BECAUSE HE WILL HAVE MERCY ON US AND FORGIVE US OF OUR SINS. "THERE ARE NONE GOOD, WE WILL ALL COME SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD"

This man has backed up and befriended that monster in Iran who has been imprisoning and executing not only his own people but your brothers and sisters in Christ . Chavez himself is despised by many of his people. If you remember how Paul after his experience came to the apostles none of them believed him either because of his treatment of the Christians .Jesus had to supernaturally intervene to assure them that he was on the level and He did not criticize them for being suspicious of his motives like you are.

If he is turning to the Catholic Church in Latin America, he's in trouble. The Catholic Church down there is a mixture of Chriistianity, Spiritism, Animism, ancestor worship and whatever other religeons were there before the Spanish and Portugese colonized the continent. The Church allowed this to keep the people in check, and the current church there has very little in comparison to Christianity.

I think that it would be what JESUS would ask, "Let us give him a chance. He may not be a s weak as we are in out everyday lives, whether for GOD or not. Many times, those who come to GOD from a very sinful life are more sincere and loyal, than many who have be Christians all of our lives.

Humans seek God most of the time when they are in trouble instead of believing in HIM at all times. Churches are empty when we are in war, but when good times come, they don't even remember who God is! That is our problem. Our God is a loving giving God, who forgive anyone who seek Him and ask for forgiving. He knows us so well, after all He made us. I and my whole family have been in a concentration camp as a child in World War II, so I know what suffering is, and I only trust in Our God. He is Our Salvation. I hope Chavez is honest with God.

This rat fink dictator will hopefully take his anti-USA garbage with him when they put him six feet under. He's earned his current contemptible status.

  • pleadnthe5th

My fellow posters, you really know you are on the wrong side of the equation when someone seems to want the knowledge of the truth and we shut it up to them. My desire is that Chavez will come to a true saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and so should be the prayer of all of us…

  • DockyWocky

Wait until Obama goes out, complete with the billowing clouds of sanctimonious hypocrisy.

It will be all the more fun when St. Peter pulls the "DOWN" lever.

    • Chris

What a load of old cobblers. You are deluded. There can be no heaven or hell. Get a biology book and learn how your brain works – dolt.

      • myth buster

        Why are you here?

  • shylock

Too late for him and for the peple that support him, good for the rest of the humanity, RNIP the sooner the better

  • Leo

As soon as he gets better Christ would be forgotten for good and he would say socialists medicine cured him .
I home this moron is going to die . .

  • guest

While this is encouraging, he hasn't actually turned to Christianity unless he is trusting Jesus for his ETERNAL state. If he is only trusting Jesus for his earthly state, he has not really turned to Christianity.

  • Nancy Sternberg

Hugo is not born again, not yet. But God is knocking very hard at his door. Keep praying.

  • johnnywoods

Funny how the reality of approaching death changes your outlook on living.

  • Blue

I don't believe one second he is a christian. He is grasping at straws to live. If it wasn't for the cancer, he wouldn't even call on Christ Jesus. I'm sure a lot of atheists lay dying start to think about where they are going afterwards.

    • ceejay

Now , CHAVEZ is smelling the SULFUR in hell like he used to say and is humbling himself before GOD. Our GOD is a forgiving GOD and if CHAVEZ is sincere , his plea will be heard.

  • Goatie

Chavez, if your are sincere about the Lord, set a good example to Obama and the other Communist power thugs in the world. Tell them what you have discovered. Tell them to set right all of the attrocities that they have done to the good people of the world. Tell them that they, too, will face God one day. Be truthful. Be sincere. If you are only trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the Lord, you will suffer even worse.

    • truthisliberty

Amen that is the truth! Sadly Obamas more cunning and luring people to spiritual damnations.

  • mesaman

To this pathetic little gnome, there isn't enough time left to atone for all the criminal acts he committed against humanity.

  • Ann

"There are no atheists in foxholes" is the phrase that immediately comes to my mind regarding this man and his alleged turnaround. If it is true, the Lord bless him. If it is not, it won't be the Lord's blessing that Hugo Chavez will encounter when he breathes his last. For Chavez's soul, I pray that he is sincere.

  • Mexseiko

Regardless of whether his body heals, Hugo must repent and confess sin. Hugo cursed Israel from the bottom of his heart in. 2010 (video on YouTube). This act carries a promise to Abraham recorded in Gen 12:3.

  • LoneStar

Jesus, Dont leave this world without Him.

  • http://twitter.com/lambsev11 @lambsev11

Give thanks to the Lord, for He IS good and His mercy endureth forever.

I think Chavez is doing a bold thing in front of his communist friends. It is very rare that God does not give mercy to those who call on Him for it. I pray Chavez have a miracle of faith and truly KNOW the Messiah and Savior Jesus!

  • Tout

Let's say a prayer for him.

  • Luong

What he needs is a good Pentecostal preacher to bring him to God YAHWEH. I'll gladly volunteer if Pres. Chavez pays for my airfare.

    In Christ,
    Luong

    • truthisliberty

Sir keep my friend in prayer…her name is Janelle

  • ORP the Alien

He's looking for a fire escape, as many do. Will he find it? Depends on his heart. It is certainly possible. Let's watch and see if he begins to undo the evil he has done in his political career. He has a lot to undo and not much time, apparently, to undo it.

  • Andy

Maybe God will do us all a favor and take Hugo home. I don't care whose home He takes him to but just get him the heck out of our hair.

  • Winston

For Hugo Chavez, is it ever too little, too late? Never forget that GOD knows the very heart of every person and if their death bed conversion is sincere or not. No one has heard Chavez utter a word of repentance for his evil and sinful ways.

    • truthisliberty

Gods word says "bear fruits worthy of repentance " His actions will speak louder then his words. The fact he endorsed Obama reveals he's still operating in the darkness.

  • Esteban Cafe

    Whatever it takes.

  • Buck

I,m curious , what is GODS feeling for sinners that enslave and destroy an entire nation ? Will his repentence convince him to return freedom and liberty to his countrymen ? I seriously doubt it , and so his conversion is as phony as his American hollywood supporters .

  • CommieKiller

A friend in need is a friend indeed!
