Axelrod says Romney's Mormonism is off-limits

House Speaker John A. Boehner dismissed as "nonsense" a proposed GOP campaign attack on President Obama's past association with the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., as well as a Democratic fundraising effort that followed.

"This kind of nonsense shouldn't happen," said Boehner on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." "The election is going to be about the economy and getting Americans back to work. And I think Gov. Romney's prescriptions are much better."

The role of the harsh attack ads — this one over the delicate topic of religion — reared this week after the New York Times disclosed a proposal from conservative strategists to wage an ad blitz against Obama, linking him to the controversial remarks from Wright, his former pastor in Chicago.

At the same time, Obama campaign senior advisor David Axelrod said Sunday that Mitt Romney's Mormon religion was off-limits in Democratic strategies for the campaign.

    Of course… That would open a whole muslim can of worms for Obummer…

    • Wordman

      Obama is not a Muslim. He's a godless worshiper of the secular state, and like all secular statists, is a hater of western (read "Christian") civilization. In addition he is a second generation anti-colonialist (He says as much very clearly in his book.) and so has a particular "rage" against all colonial (Europe) and neo-colonial (America) powers. There is a reason he travels around the world stooping, scraping, and apologizing in the name of America. He despises our history. And there was a reason he gave the Brits a very sharp stick in the eye by promptly boxing and returning the bust of Churchill that was given as a gift to the White House, and had previously occupied a place of conspicuous honor in The People's House for many administrations. That's why the Royal Family was careful to NOT invite him to the latest royal wedding while inviting almost every other head of state in the world. This man wants to "fundamentally reshape America" because he despises the America that we have known and loved.

        "..neo-colonial (America).."

        ROTFLMAO, go back to sleep Wordman!

          Wow. Deep. You must teach at Columbia.

    Tit for tat. The campaigns agreed that if Romney would leave Rev. Wright out of it, Obama's people wouldn't play the Mormon card. Both knew that attacking religion would be risky business anyway. Personally I think Romney might have got the worst of the trade and probably knows it, but out of loyalty to the LDS church, made the deal anyway. Oh well. Super pacs and other privateers can stil do as they please if they don't mind risking denouncement by their respective candidates.

  • Evermyrtle

    Bohner, who is he working for, anyway?? "He sounds like one of them!"

  • Esteban Cafe

    Both men are big enough to address questions about their respective faiths, so let them. Everything should be on the table.

      It is strickly politics these days; nothing more. There are no Statesmen; only greed and it speaks loud and clear. The few who do want to do best for our country and blasted continuously by the left. WDC is so corrupt it needs to be completely revamped FOR the American people and not for self gratification and power of the leaders.

    Religions of all kinds enjoy bad reputations from one thing in particular: the bad behavior of their adherents.

    • Wordman

      Yeah, people like Mother Theresa, and Dr. Livingstone really Christianity a bad name, huh?

      • http://twitter.com/lambsev11 @lambsev11

        OK WORDMAN, you are saying some religions also enjoy the reputations of their saints? I agree.

  • Gdrake

    Especially since Prince Harry Reid is a Mormon

    So in other words, we should just ignore the character and background of both candidates. Yeah, right, that's how we got stuck with Obama the first time around. Obama does not want anyone to know anything about his background, and with good reason.

    "While nearly 400,000 concerned citizens demand President Obama present his elusive “long-form” birth certificate, more than a dozen other documents remain unreleased or otherwise blocked from the public eye.

    Numerous documents which have yet to be surrendered include the following:

    * Obama kindergarten records

    * Punahou School records

    * Occidental College records

    * Columbia University records

    * Columbia thesis “Soviet Nuclear Disarmament”

    * Harvard Law School records

    * Harvard Law Review articles

    * University of Chicago scholarly articles

    * Passport

    * Medical records

    Other documents

    According to additional records listed at the The Obama File, other documents that remain unreleased include:

    * Complete files and schedules of his years as an Illinois state senator from 1997 to 2004
    * Obama’s client list from during his time in private practice with the Chicago law firm of Davis, Miner, Barnhill and Gallard
    * Illinois State Bar Association records
    * Baptism records
    * Obama/Dunham marriage license
    * Obama/Dunham divorce documents
    * Soetoro/Dunham marriage license
    * Adoption records

      If we could get those records he would be out of the WH immediately!

      • Wordman

        Had the main stream media not been complicit in suppressing the truth, Obama might not have gotten IN the WH, but I doubt the truth would now put him immediately out. His followers, who are many, seem oblivious — Like, "Don't confuse us with the facts!" He's a frighteningly accomplished liar, an expert at mixing a little truth with lies, and knows how to cook up just the right mixture to keep his followers on board and his enemies off balance. For one thing it simply amazes me how most of the black church continues to ignore Obama's manifest hostility to all things substantively Christian. So they continue to sell their spiritual "birth right" for a bowl of racial identity. I love my brothers in Christ irrespective of skin color, but shame on a good part of the American church for selling Christ cheaper than Judas Iscariot did. Maybe the homosexual "marriage" issue will wake some of them up. If not, and they stand with him in approving of homosexual sin for the sake of political expediency, in time that sin WILL (mark my words) attach itself to the black community like a plauge. Woe upon woe.

      • keyboardshark

        Yes, and with all he has done in office so far, he should probably be charged with treason.

    The real question about Romney's Mormon beliefs is this: "How can a man be expected to exercise the judgment and discretion needed to be President of the United States when he has shown himself to have been inveigled into believing anything as totally nutty and provably absurd as the Mormon religion?"

    • Vladimir

      Romney's successes seem to refute your asertions about his religion.
