NATO Kills Senior Al-Qaida Leader in Afghanistan

The U.S.-led NATO force in Afghanistan killed al-Qaida's second-highest leader in the country in an airstrike in eastern Kunar province, the coalition said Tuesday.

Sakhr al-Taifi, also known as Mushtaq and Nasim, was responsible for commanding foreign insurgents in Afghanistan and directing attacks against NATO and Afghan forces, the alliance said. He frequently traveled between Afghanistan and Pakistan, carrying out commands from senior al-Qaida leadership and ferrying in weapons and fighters.

The airstrike that killed al-Taifi and another al-Qaida militant took place Sunday in Kunar's Watahpur district, the coalition said. A follow-on assessment of the area determined that no civilians were harmed, it said.

The U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan was carried out because al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden used the country as his base to plan the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York and Washington.

Most of al-Qaida's senior leaders are now believed to be based in Pakistan, where they fled following the U.S. invasion. The terrorist organization is believed to have only a nominal presence in Afghanistan.

It may seem OK now because it was an Al-Qaida leader who was killed, but wait until the armed drones are cruising over YOUR neighborhood. Think I'm kidding? Think again.

"American police officers may soon be able to use unmanned aircraft not only for surveillance, but also for offensive action. The drones may be equipped to fire rubber rounds and tear gas.

“Those are things that law enforcement utilizes day in and day out, and in certain situations it might be advantageous to have this type of system on the UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle),” Chief Deputy Randy McDaniel of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office in Texas told The Daily news app as he outlined the possible development.

The US military and CIA have used drones armed with lethal weapons to target militants overseas for years. The prospect of having “lite” versions of those remotely controlled killer-machines circling over America gave some second thoughts to rights groups.

There are other potential threats of a wide fleet of armed drones operating in a country. For instance, their communication is not tamper-proof, as the recent downing of an American spy drone by Iran showed. So malignant hackers may take over control of a police UAV and use it for nefarious ends.

The US Federal Aviation Administration allowed several public safety agencies to use drones domestically with fewer restrictions last week. UAVs weighting up to 11.3 kilos can now be operated by police, fire and similar departments without special approval.

The step moves forward a campaign for broader use of drones in America, which was launched by Congress in mid-February." http://rt.com/usa/news/us-domestic-drones-armed-0

Obama shockingly does not take any credit for this success in the "War on Terrorism". Any personal acknowledgement of his strong Islamic roots would certainly foster a Jihad against our Islamic POTUS!!!!!

    • EVERMYRTLE

I really can't say if he takes any credit for any advance on terrorism, but why should he, unless he has accomplished something in that line?

Doesn't say how many civilians were killed, and their ages. Guess that's a good sign. As for this guy being an al Qaida leader, al Qaida is a creation of the US, so I don't know if anybody should "take credit" for it. Besides, I thought it was the Taliban the US/NATO was fighting in Afghanistan and that we originally invaded the country to get bin Laden…
