Vatican criticizes US nun's book on sexuality

The Vatican on Monday sharply criticized a book on sexuality written by a prominent American nun, saying it contradicted church teaching on issues like masturbation, homosexuality and marriage and that its author had a "defective understanding" of Catholic theology.

The Vatican's orthodoxy office said the book, "Just Love: A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics" by Sister Margaret Farley, a member of the Sisters of Mercy religious order and emeritus professor of Christian ethics at Yale Divinity School, posed "grave harm" to the faithful.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said that in the 2006 book, Farley either ignored church teaching on core issues of human sexuality or treated it as merely one opinion among many.

Farley said Monday she never intended the book to reflect current official Catholic teaching. Rather, she said, she wrote it to explore sexuality via various religious traditions, theological resources and human experience.

Forgive my ignorance, but what, exactly, would (should?) a Nun know about sexuality…?

    • Winston

      Deviates are usually frustrated people.

      • daves

It's good to see the Catholics are reigning in their women folk.

  • Evermyrtle

Nuns, I UNDERSTAND, are not supposed to have any personal knowledge of sex, unless they had sexual experience before becoming Nuns. Maybe like the Priest "pedophiles!" or did the priest become pedophiles after becoming priests. There is a lot that I know, that I do not understand about this business!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • daves

She never claimed to have personal knowledge of sex.

      • evermyrtle

I thought that was what she was writing about. and I feel if you unless you have had some experience you don't know a lot about it.

    • CJM

You are so disgusting, evermyrtle, it's unbelieveable…and you call yourself a christian! Just so you know, there are just as many pedophiles from other churches–many who happen to be ministers and pastors–that commit crimes against children. Quit acting as if the Catholic Church is the only one with that stigma. As a retired child protective service worker, I have run across MANY of these perverts from other religious groups and I am glad to say, they are still in prison for what they have done. When priests were caught, they also went to jail, so not every one of them were transferred to another diocese as the media would have you think.

The better question would be what is a Catholic nun doing serving as an academic administrator at a non-Catholic school? As she is "Catholic" in name only, it is obvious she is not an authentic nun, but, as so many "priests" since the 70's were homosexual predators, she is yet merely another wolf in sheep's clothing, predating upon authentic Catholic teaching on sexuality in order to take as many protesting Catholics as possible to Hell along with her.

Jesus said there would be scandal, that it would be inescapable, but woe to that person who is taken in by it. Millstone, anyone?

    • CJM

Catholic nuns do teach in secular schools such as universites and colleges—she is hardly a "wolf in sheep's clothing." And ministers, pastors, and rabbi's share just as much of the predatory scandals as the priests did; no church has a premium on crimes against children or adults. Non-Catholics commit just as many crimes as Catholics do; just because the religious appelation is baptist, methodist, episcopalian, etc—so own it.

      • peter1589

In disobedience to the Magisterium, she is indeed a wolf in sheep's clothing. Catholicism follows Jesus's dire warning, the path to Hell is broad and many there are who fall into it. Seek ye the narrow path. Few there are who find it.

Hence, you PROTEST-ants who aspire to Heaven via the satanic device known as sola scriptura, which has divided, sub-divided and sub-divided multiply into now well over 38,000 different sects, each with their own, unique, interpretations of "Truth," are falling into Hell by the millions. As are all Catholics who diverge from the Apostolic Traditions kept intact by Holy Mother Church.

I exaggerate? I lie? Really? How, then, do you explain the fact that the Church has remained intact against all the relentless assaults, criticisms, back-stabbing, wars, attacks and contempt for the ONLY Church which Jesus Christ established at Pentecost. You try and try and try, but you just. can't. kill. It. Can you?

Doesn't that tell you something about Christ's warning to St. Paul, "It is hard to beat against the goad."

The path is narrow and few there are who find it. Come home, disobedient children, to the Church Christ established, not the "social justice" mentality of the Catholic "nun" whose habit-less, disobedient, contempt for the Church's authority will take her soon into a place I have already experienced, a place of incomprehensible hatred, attempting and failing to tear one's flesh apart to escape the relentless, eternal pain, fire and torture from creatures of such unimaginable heinous, vicious, furious and murderous employment that you would have done ANYthing here on earth in obedience to the Church to escape such eternal damnation.

I lie? I'm a nutcase? Oooo, just you wait till you experience for all eternity what God gifted me for a mere 2 seconds.

Doesn't that tell you something about Christ's warning to St. Paul, "It is hard to beat against the goad." (I'd sure like to know how you beat against a goad)

          • Eric

"I'd sure like to know how you beat against a goad"

By resisting it. The KJV says "kick against the pricks," which is a bit more clear.

In the first place, the pope demands that he provides prior approval on anything that is authored by one of his flock; obviously, she did not submit the manuscript to him for that approval. In the second place, women are subservient to the church and their words carry very little weight amongst the male hierarchy. If a priest had written the book, there would be no public chastisement. To say that nun's are not supposed to have knowlege about sexuality is about the most idiotic "understanding" I have ever heard of. All that is required by the church is that a nun have no carnal knowledge—but even at that, women who have been widowed and never divorced, have become nuns with the blessings of the vatican (and even have borne children; usually, those widowed mothers have raised their children–just so some don't get the idea that the children were abandoned as orphans).

It is not good for man to be alone… So many nuns could be just as sacrificial in their faith by making good wives for men who are presently alone. And So many in the Roman church (HER PRIESTS) NEED wives. It is NOT GOOD for man to be alone.

The Sexual Revolution has unleashed hoardes of demonic entities leading people like our subject today, the disobedient nun feeling she is a pope-unto-herself and has the full power to redefine Catholicism according to her perverted sexual knowledge, to be "revolutionaries" turning to lesbianism, interracial fornication, impoverished and destitute single mothers, while pornography, yet another tool of satan to destroy the family, has led men to feel it totally unnecessary to have to deal with such "liberated" feminist minds and their constant antagonism toward male authority, to just get their rocks off with online stimulation.

Women are abandoned, and men have little need for them in order to have a little peace in their lives. And their pride and pornographic submissions are at the root of it all. Thanks, Satan, for destroying the religious family.

I say do away with the Great Whore of Revelation 17, the Vatican, for good. Amen.
