Mormons excited about Romney, but wary of media

Most Mormons in Utah believe that Mitt Romney’s rise to become the likely GOP presidential nominee is a good thing for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But many do not trust the media to cover the church fairly, according to a new poll released Monday (June 25).

The study, conducted by Key Research and Brigham Young University’s Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy, is believed to be the first to gauge Mormons’ reaction to Romney’s barrier-breaking achievement. He is the first Mormon to clinch the presidential nomination of a major U.S. political party.

More than eight in 10 Utah Mormons said they are “very excited” or “somewhat excited” about Romney’s feat. Nearly as many (77 percent) said his nomination is a good thing for the LDS church; just 2 percent told pollsters it was a negative development.

Utah Mormons do not differ in many respects from Mormons in other states, according to studies conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.

When has the liberal media reported ANYTHING correctly when it wasn't favorable to their agenda? When I was very young it wasn't this way. Over the years I started feeling something wasn't right and then conservative talk radio came on the scene and it was like a breath of fresh air. My neighbors still don't think something is true unless it appears in the gray media.

I felt the same. CNN alone has been caught in lies too. Also notice how they never covered Ron Paul?

Many of my friends at church are simply aloof of the whole political scene. They are more concerned with what they will be teaching during FHE, what they will be preparing for LL, and can they gather enought people for the baseball team. Politics is just not that high on the agenda. Being somewhat new to this reaction to politics, I have done a little bit of digging: my home teacher told me that I shouldn't worry about politics because it is all in His hands and what can be done will be done by good men such as Mitt Romney who wants to be a public servant. They obviously don't need the money. I have supported Mitt because he and Ann have a great family, success in their marriage, love to share with the public obviously and really are willing to serve where they feel they can be effective. They in fact have always been public servants. If Mitt is like many youngsters who are Mormon, he saved his own money to pay his own mission. He served in France for 30 months and married Ann within just a few months of returning.

Why can't they see he is a disgrace to the Mormon Church. If the approve of him,it is a sure sign that they are not a Christian people, they are putting fame above righteousness.

    • Esteban Cafe

Yikes! Recall Jimmy Carter…hopefully you're not using the same rule for us Evangelicals…

  • Ron Thomas

Read Chapter 12 of My Kingdom Come by Ed Decker if you want to know the Mormon church's goals for Mitt Romney.

    • erx

Sorry, I don't have a copy of that on hand right now. What does it say? If it is anything like his hit, "The God Makers" it is full of half truths and lies. I'm not a very good mormon, but even I can see a factually challenged hit piece when it is so obvious. It must pay awfully well.

      • bighoss

"The God Makers" is absolutely correct in its representation that Mormons believe a male Mormon can progress to become a god over his own world with multiple wives with which to physically copulate to produce myriads of children who become his subjects.

That is a firm doctrine of Mormonism, however ridiculous it sounds and IS.

    • Pastor Dwayne

Instead of reading out of , My Kingdom Come , to know mormon church goals , I would much rather mormons would read ONLY out of the BIBLE, to get their goals for anybody.

      • http://rationalresponses.blogspot.com/ Jeff Dixon

Why? the bible does not offer any value.

        • keyboardshark

Billions of people worldwide throughout the centuries would disagree.

        • dwoodphd

Jeff: You leave me in a quandry about what you are about. Do you really mean this, or do you just like being the "devil's advocate"? It isn't true, you know… what you said about the bible, that is.

  • Truth

Your right… Romney's really bad news. He doesn't fit in to the secular vision of the new world. Good man, loyal husband and father… If the media were not so biased we could learn a lot more about the man… but, I suppose suppression is the whole point. We sure wouldn't want a balanced campaign coverage.

    • dwoodphd

Truth: The ideas about Romney on this blog are disturbing to me. Who cares if "He doesn't fit in to the secular vision of the new world." !!! (tongue in cheek?) But I understand he won't get the votes if he is perceived that way. Also we DO want a "balanced campaign coverage" But having said that, I really think "what you see" with Mitt is "what you get." There are no smoke and mirrors with Mitt. Yet, seriously, the reason Mitt seems weak to a lot of people is because they don't understand his capabilities, he keeps them under wraps and because there is so much highway-robbery in the world of money, he will put to work only when it is most effective for the good of the world and in Mitt's eyes that would be for the good of the USA since (he has written in APOLOGY) for peace through strength. Mitt's resume, his successes, are real, but in the academic as in business, one must play one's hand at the right time. That is where the genius of the man will be manifest, to us and the other "players" who would thwart him if they knew his strategy. For them, if he does it right, it will be too late.

I recall how happy our church was over the election of Mr. (Born Again) Jimmy Carter in America. And I recall how badly that turned out. I have since learned not worry too much about the candidates' religions–unless it encourages members to be theives, liars, murderers, Communists, Socialists, etc. The fact is that no one lives up to their religious commitments, ergo, repentence. But a leader who tries to live up to the tenets of their religion is better than one who just mouths it.

Personally, I think Mr. Romney is a fine man and have read several backgrounders on him–at the personal level, not the public level. They reveal a man with compassion, honesty and charity. I may not agree with his doctrines, but he seems to be a better leader than what I've seen of your Mr. Obama. It could be worse.

  • bighoss

If the media candidly reported the true facts concerning Mormonism's sordid history and bizarre doctrines, the American people would learn what they really need to know about that outlandish cult.

    • http://rationalresponses.blogspot.com/ Jeff Dixon

Romney is a good man. Not that it means anything to either liberals or conservatives.

      • dwoodphd

I never know whether to give you a thumbs up or thumbs down Jeff. So I thought I would just tell you that I appreciate that you know Romney to be a good man. I agree and I am a solid conservative, but still I love everyone since I am commanded to do by my Heavenly Father. (Not always easy to do.) Christ said "As I have loved you, love one another" … Mormon doctrine … in that I am sure Mitt abides!

    • Esteban Cafe

Sir, are you saying that Mormons are "sordid" in action and belief? Please explain their "sordid history." Are you talking about polygamy? Did they abuse their women? I'm very interested in hearing about what you consider "sordid."

Every Mormon I know (2 families, 2 business contacts) is an excellent representative of their faith. What do we need to know about this "outlandish cult"?

Note that all of our religions have peculiarities. Consider: who did Adam and Eve's children reproduce with? Let us carefully tread here lest we stub our own toes.

Mormons are polytheists… More so than Hindus are. Read their phantasmagorical religious conundrums.

The biggest mistake one can make is to worry about the lying media. If they say bad things about you, you must be doing things right. So, who wants their sanction? Everybody knows they are socialist puppets, and it's going to change. One thing you can always count on is the fact that satanic tyranny always rips itself to shreds. They want you to fear them. So just don't. Pity them.

  • keyboardshark

Everyone should beware of the mainstream media, unless you are a big-government, secular liberal.

  • Wayne

You cannot judge a man on the entire history of his church. I think that Romney is a good man who will do his best to serve our country and bring us out of the quagmire that we are in, that is what I care about most. I would have been more pleased with a stronger conservative in the White House because we very well may take the Senate and build stronger majority in the Congress. With that, a strong conservative could get a lot done in a short period of time. With Romney, I am afraid there will be a lot of compromises made that will weaken our position of strength. I do not care so much that he is a faux Christian (Mormon cult), I do care about his character. Mormons are not bloodthirsty Muslims desiring to take down America and Israel. Most Mormons are very well intentioned and have strong moral character.
