An Open Letter to the Hotel Industry

We write to ask you to stop offering pornographic movies in your company’s hotels. We make no proposal here to limit your legal freedom, nor do we threaten protests, boycotts, or anything of the sort. We simply ask you to do what is right as a matter of conscience.

We are, respectively, a Christian and a Muslim, but we appeal to you not on the basis of truths revealed in our scriptures but on the basis of a commitment that should be shared by all people of reason and goodwill: a commitment to human dignity and the common good. As teachers and as parents, we seek a society in which young people are encouraged to respect others and themselves—treating no one as an impersonal object or thing. We hope that you share our desire to build such a society.

Pornography is degrading, dehumanizing, and corrupting. It undermines self-respect and respect for others. It reduces persons—creatures bearing profound, inherent, and equal dignity—to the status of objects. It robs a central aspect of our humanity—our sexuality—of its dignity and beauty. It ensnares some in addiction. It deprives others of their sense of self-worth. It teaches our young people to settle for the cheap satisfactions of lust, rather than to do the hard, yet ultimately liberating and fulfilling, work of love.

Don't show dirty movies because of a commitment to human dignity and common good is a good thing but first of all it should because it is against the 'WILL OF GOD" and according to HIS WORD. It is completely unacceptable that "GOD AND HIS WORD" is completely, deliberately ignored as the reason. This is a gigantic sign of where we stand in GOD'S world, in this day and age.

    • Steve03

And where in the Bible does it mention movies, dirty or otherwise?

      • http://www.thisisourgod.com Frank

In Matthew 5:17-20, Jesus says: ""Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven." Then In Matthew 5:27-28, Jesus says: "You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart." This covers what is going on in the hearts of both the promoters and users of pornography.

        • Evermyrtle

Thanks, Frank!!! You are right and HIS WORD mentions the evil that we are committing in many other places.

        • Tout

&#0301 What does it stand for ?

          • Tout

What is Dan&#039t Why did it not get printed; does it have to be added to an other word ?

          • Tout

That's funny. I type the letters, but they don't show up on the computer.

  • DW

Steve, it talks about lust and how we treat each other repeatedly. It doesn't specifically mention abortion, but it says don't take innocent life and recognizes life in the womb. It isn't hard to add 2 plus 2. Pornography is degrading and wrong.

    • http://conservativebyte.com Michael G.

Seems tome I heard something about: "The Lust of eye; the Lust of the flesh; and the Pride of life." That about covers everything.

  • Miss Vinay Duggal

Don't watch adult movies when you're a hotel guest…but don't interfere with other adults' viewing pleasure. Freedom of Viewership!

    • cyoder

I have no plans to rape someone. Do you mean I shouldn't prevent someone else from doing it if they enjoy it. Same principle.

      • http://rationalresponses.blogspot.com/ JWDixon66

It is not the same principle at all. Rape is an unwanted attack. The performers in adult movies are doing it willingly.

      • Evermyrtle

I imagine if you do not know GOD, you cannot understand, this is evil, something that he warns us about. That is where the separation comes in. Living according to GOD'S will or ignoring GOD'S will. You may not know it, but each of us will face GOD one day and we need to know what we are going to say, if HE should ask us a question about why we did not heed HIS WORD.

    • Evermyrtle

I would seek a hotel that does not offer such movies. If I could not find one, I would try a motel.

  • http://twitter.com/lambsev11 @lambsev11

Has anyone called for a boycott here? When you travel, attend a church service and offer the bedroom in your home to those who travel to your city. Perhaps if we all did we could save ourselves a bundle of cash.

  • http://twitter.com/lambsev11 @lambsev11

    the spare bedroom…

  • bighoss

There are six places in the New Testament where LASCIVIOUSNESS is condemned. Lasciviousness is what porn is all about. Thus, in condemning lasciviousness, the Bible is condemning porn.

    • keyboardshark

You are spot-on, bighoss. That should answer Steve03's question above. Pornographic movies are simply a means of delivery of lascivious content.

      • http://rationalresponses.blogspot.com/ JWDixon66

Should they also refuse to offer to rent rooms to anyone that cannot prove they are married to the person they are checking into the room with?

I also assume they should not sell anyone shellfish in their dining room.

        • keyboardshark

Actually, refusing to offer to rent rooms to anyone that cannot prove they are married to the person they are checking into the room with wouldn't be a bad policy for a hotel, considering that it would be upholding Biblical standards of morality. Business owners should not be forced to violate the dictates of their own conscience but unfortunately in today's world the government would interfere with their rights to free commerce and scream that it was 'discrimination'. It is a sad commentary on the loss of liberty in the U.S. whereby the government forces private business owners to conduct commerce that violates their standards of morality.

"To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation
of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors, is sinful and tyrannical.
          "

As for the shellfish, I see no reason to prohibit its sale unless the proprietor of the establishment chooses not to serve it. Again, it should be a commercial decision free from the dictates of government.

P.S. Are you related to Jeff Dixon?

  • Dennis

Wow really? Youve got to be kiddin me.I actually work in a hotel have for over 8 years.Although we do not offer movies pornagraphic or otherwise to try and legislate moral behavior in the privacy of ones room is idiocy. You dont wanna watch it then dont in fact you cant even see anything unless you actually order it pay for it then watch it.You dont view this stuff by accident. There are far more important things to worry about than what a adult man or woman is viewing in there room that they rented as they are traveling.
