America: Christian or Post-Christian?

A recent poll of the hundred or so board members of the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) found most denying America is a Christian nation.

"Much of the world refers to America as a Christian nation, but most of our Christian leaders don't think so," explained NAE President Leith Anderson in a news release. "The Bible only uses the word 'Christian' to describe people and not countries. Even those who say America is a Christian nation admit that there are lots of non-Christians and even anti-Christian beliefs and behaviors."

About 68 percent agreed America is not Christian while 32 said it is, according to the June 2012 Evangelical Leaders Survey. Both pro and con agreed America is a missions field.

"America is one of the world's great mission fields that the Church has been called to reach in this generation," said George Wood, General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God denomination, which is one of NAE's largest member churches, if not the largest, with over 2 million members.

Neither – it is a pre-christian nation – just as are the others.

    We
are a nation with many Christians
and people of different religious beliefs but we are not a Christian nation
even though our founding fathers used Biblical principles in setting up our
government. However, we are a Client
Nation for God. A Client Nation is
assigned the responsibility for the formation, preservation, communication and
fulfillment of the Canon of Scripture. Even
though our Nation was built on Biblical principles that most Christians today
know nothing about; it is not ALL Christian.
Also, Christianity is not a religion; it is a relationship with Jesus
Christ. If we were a Christian Nation we
would NOT allow other religions to exist here just like the Muslims do not
allow Christianity to exist in their countries.
It is not who is in power that matters; it has to do with Christians who
are growing in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ and applying
Biblical principles to their lives each day.
Then our Nation will be cleansed from most of the evil that is upon us.
How can we call this Nation a Christian nation when most Christians do not
    follow God’s mandates?

We ceased being a Christian nation that believed and followed the First Commandment (as did 17th-century Colonial governments, which wrote it and its judgment into their Constitutions) the moment the States ratified the polytheistic empowering First Amendment. We quickly went from a united nation under one God to a divided nation under many gods, the most polytheistic nation to exist, outside the Roman empire.

So you are saying, Ted R. Weiland, that before the 1st Amendment was ratified we could only worship one God and after the ratification we were empowered to worship many gods. How can a temporal government impose a specific object of worship upon its citizens? Certainly not by doing away with the 1st Amendment. Your thinking is muddled, tortured, apparently politically motivated and certainly not Christian.
      '
Why don't you go back to preaching Jesus Christ and Him crucified?

      • http://www.missiontoisrael.org Ted R. Weiland

Vladimir, so like you to obfuscate and distort. You know what I wrote above is addressing the government and not us as individuals. Why don't you address what I wrote – that is, that prior to the ratification of the First Amendment, America was predominately a monotheistic Christian nation and since the ratification, we have become the most polytheistic nation to exist.

Being that you're a Mormon, don't you think it's just a bit hypocritical for you to accuse me of muddled, tortured, and un-Christian thinking?

        • Vladimir

Obfuscate and distort what you say? Me? You don't need any help there, Ted R. Weiland. The point you are alwaying making is, simply stated, DOWN WITH THE U.S. CONSTITUTION. You want it overthrown because it is an obstacle to the implementation of marxist-socialism by your sponsors.
          '
For your information, Ted R. Weiland, Christianity has flourished just fine under the U.S. Constitution. Better than anywhere on the face of the earth. And the reason is, here we are free to choose, courtesy of the protections afforded us by the U.S. Constitution.

    • James C. Harrison

Right on, Ted R. Weiland! Whenever this pluralistic society gets out of hand, the American Caesar decides which gods shall prevail. For some funny reason, it's always those gods that put Caesar first. Article 6 tells us in no uncertain terms who is "god." It is the Constitution and all laws and treaties made under the authority of the United States, including the United Nations Charter. It's time to fight back and proclaim the law of the God of the Bible as the "Supreme Law" of every land!

To get a fair vote you will have to tally more than a hundred or so of the elite, the NAE. That does, not in any way, give us a fair vote. The problem is that the government is made up of 90% anti-GOD people who does not in any way represent America, you need to get out there where the people are to get a fair vote.

  • Wesley

we might not be politically a Christian nation, but 2/3 to 3/4 of Americans claim to be Christian which would make us a Christian nation. the biggest problem is that calling yourself a Christian and being a true Christian is two totally different things. to be a true Christian you have to believe in your heart and confess with your mouth the essential doctrines of the faith found in the Apostles', Nicene, and Athanasius' creeds. only true Christians are part of the "one holy catholic and apostolic Church".

The only way to become a Christian is to believe in Jesus Christ as your savior; nothing else.
Eternal salvation from sin, death and hell is the free gift of God's grace, and is based solely upon man's personal faith and belief in Jesus Christ. He voluntarily died as a substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead, thus guaranteeing our own resurrection to eternal life. This salvation is not received by, nor based on, any sacrament, merit, or good work on our part. This one who receives Christ's salvation is eternally secure. (John 1:11-13, 3:16, 5:24, 10:28-30, 14:6; Acts 16:31; Romans 3:23-26, 5:8, 6:23, 10:9-10; Ephesians 2:8-10; Titus 3:5; Hebrews 7:24-25; I Peter 1:18-19, I John 5:11-13)
To live the Christian way of life is to follow Christ's mandates in the Bible written for NT believers.

We are really ignorant to ask this question. It is what it is. Christians should know who they are, and which of their neighbors are not Christians. Are you a "christian?" How do you know it is so?

America is a Christian nation in a loose sense of the term. In the Civil War half the country prayed to God for victory in a war to defend their desire to own people and esteem them inferior. Today, many "Christians" vote for a man who supports abortion of babies who survive the attempt. Many Christans do not object the immorality backed by a political party. Claiming to be Christian is easy. Making decision with God's will at heart is another story. The majority of American Christians take the name of the Lord in vane, give Christianity a bad name, and travel life to hear "Depart from me. I never knew you." at the end of the journey. It's self-deception.
