US wrestler open about faith, on & off mat

In qualifying for the U.S. wrestling Olympics team, Sam Hazewinkel did more than just fulfill a lifelong dream.

He made history, both for himself and for his dad.

Dave Hazewinkel, Sam's father, wrestled in the 1968 and 1972 Olympics. With Sam wrestling in London this week as part of the U.S. team, the pair becomes the first U.S. father and son wrestlers to compete in the Olympics for the United States.

"It's hard to put in words," Sam said about competing in the Olympics. "It's been a dream of mine that I've been chasing since I was really young. It's not everywhere that you get the kind of support that I got from my dad, where I understood that I could be an Olympian. He did it. I could do it. Hard work pays off."

Dave and Sam share more than a father-son relationship, however. They're also brothers in Christ, ever since Dave led Sam to the Lord when he was 6 years old.

I look up to Sam Hazewinkel, he is a great American and Christian.

That combination will leave Sam open to ridicule by leftist extremists, just as they did with Corey Cogdell and Lolo Jones.

So with Sam what will it be libs, his last name? I bet he eats plenty of chicken, maybe you could start there. He may even have visited a Chick-Fil-a .

Liberals really are the new Nazis.

You are spot-on, fliteking. I hardly recognize the America of today compared to the days of my youth. There are a scary number of similarities between Nazi/fascist regimes and the current occupants in Washington. Very sad to see this once proud nation, who put a man on the moon, deteriorate so rapidly at the hands of far-left liberals.

For the longest time I was silent, I thought I was not fully understanding what was going on in the USA. It is all very clear now.

"Liberals really are the new Nazis, fliteking?" I heard the skinhead conservatives were the new Nazis? Practically all the great athletes who came from my university are Christian actiivists… that's no big deal these days, quite common without hardly a whimper… ever heard of Tebow?

    • Mary Wood

I think this athlete will reap the same benefits as many Christian athletes from the University of Florida Christian Athletes, Tim Tebow of Jacksonville, Florida.

One does not need a "hands on" experience in mixed gender wrestling to GROPE the reason why Sam Hazewinkel holds his sensible reservations about entering such competition.

A good example of how the Church in America needs to stand up.
    Good for you Sam.

  • mallen11

We need more young people like Sam who represent Jesus Christ for young people to look up to instead of the "look at me" types that represent the world.

On Courage to testify of the word of God:
    Alma 17:16
16 Therefore, this was the cause for which the sons of Mosiah had undertaken the work, that perhaps they might bring them unto repentance; that perhaps they might bring them to know of the plan of redemption.
