Rick Warren cancels Obama-Romney forum

Rick Warren, Saddleback Church's pastor, announced Wednesday that a civil forum planned with President Barack Obama and presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney at the church has been canceled because of what Warren saw as uncivil discourse between the two campaigns.

The forum, planned for this week, would have been two hours long, with each candidate speaking with Warren for 50 minutes. The event would have fallen during the same week when four years ago Warren hosted the first such presidential campaign forum, between then-Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain. Warren said it was the 2008 forum's success among critics and pundits that led him to consider the idea again this year.

"The forum was praised for its unique format and fairness," Warren said Wednesday while announcing a decision not to hold the forum. "Also, the TV networks were eager to cover it again since it garnered one of the largest viewing audiences of that election. I talked with both campaigns about the possibility of doing it again, and they were both favorable to participating."

Warren pulled the plug on this year's forum, explaining that the current negative campaign is opposite to what the church's civil forum is about, even as plans had been ramping up to coordinate schedules, secure the area and get traffic control in check for a forum of this size. Planning had begun in March.

    What a revelation!!

The "Civil" Pre-war of the 1800's against the blasphemy of non-biblical preludes & suppositions & stances held by the "Majority" (read: "Mob-Rule") was indeed LED by the pulpits & discourses inculcated from the pulpit by righteous men with a proper read on Holy-Writ.
What a sad, sad affair of to-day we have in this Country when supposedly "Godly Men" or leaders of what is a suppository of right cannot & simply will not constrain issues to be faced to-day & instead simply whimper out & retract forums where discussion & debate should be held in a decorum "managed" by those said "Godly-Men" or leaders.
What-a-whimp in sheep's clothing Rick Warren is indeed.
A metro-religious McPastor of a McChurch spreading the Gospel-O-Prosperity of Modern Sodom & Gomorrah "Churchianity"….the farthest thing from what a Jewish Carpenter inculcated or intended.
His "Church" is about as much a "Church" as Joel Olsteen's McChurch is: Neither one is in actuality a "Church" since they do not "Open" their books, nor are required to do so, to the public since they are a privately held "for profit" corporation.
Oh well, indeed how 2 Thessalonians 2:3 is Fulfilled these days with the corruption of the Catholic Church (The mother of Harlots) & its deviousness, lasciviousness, licentious indulgence of luxury now spreading to the Catholic Daughters of Babylon As outlined in Rev. 18:4.
To Palliate evil with silence is to endorse it.
Or to quote a great Man of the 1800's:
"To Sin by Silence when one should protest makes cowards of Men" A. Lincoln.
    I give you: Rev. 21:8
"But as for cowards and the unfaithful, and the polluted, and murderers, fornicators, and those who practise magic or worship idols, and all liars–the portion allotted to them shall be in the Lake which burns with fire and sulphur. This is the Second Death. "

    Well Done Mr. Warren…Well Done.
At the very least??…You have revealed exactly which side you're really on…..

Casmige, I would add to your comment, but you took all the words from my mouth. God bless!

I was nodding my head until I got the part where you started spewing hate for the ONLY true Church Jesus started. Before embracing the all falsehoods about His beloved Church, try reading intelligent apologetics like Peter Kreeft's "Because God is Real."

There is only one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. Amen.

      • Casmige

Sorry, As a French Canadienne, I was Bourne Roman Catholic.
My Heritage with the Catholic Church goes back a long way.
I, like St. Luther, do not decry the "Truth" as much as I do the Form of godliness that has perverted the Church.

I'm sorry, but you have to show me how the "Church beloved" is not now the Church Corrupted in needing of reform….

I'm sorry, but a spade is a spade …. just like a duck is a duck if it walks & talks like a duck.

If the Catholics are the 'true' Church, why then do they baptize babies, while Christ was not baptized until 30? They have corrupted the Gospel with Papal edicts and church doctrine. That is not to say I believe all Catholics doomed, but that the hand of Man has corrupted the Holy Church. The Jewish Carpenter stressed a PERSONAL relationship with God, one that the Church was a part of, not intermediary to.

        • http://twitter.com/jamescr54174058 james crawford

Don't be too confident. The true Church will be the one that the Lord does not trample when He returns. Only He can establish that fact.

          • petroskhan

I, for one, am very confident. That nest of pagan blasphemers will be underfoot very quickly.

      • petroskhan

Dude, if you think the catholic church has anything to do with what Christ taught, you need to open your Bible a bit more often. That pagan temple is so far from what the Bible teaches, it's not even worth debating. Pagan festivals, blasphemies, idol worship…it's all there, and it's all against what God told us.

  • mallen11

Rick Warren should never have had one with McCain & -0 and it should never have been even suggested to have one between Romney & -0. No church should get involved in a national election. Each individal church has the right to teach their own congregation if they choose to do so. Our church doesn't even allow any political literature or speaking for any candidate. We are taught the Word of God and learn how to vote on our own using principles and doctrines taught. I doubt that anyone in our congregation votes for a liberal.

    • petroskhan

"No church should get involved in a national election."

If you don't mind too much, could tell me why you think that's so? It seems to me that it is exactly the sort of thing we should get involved in, to keep out the kind of amoral, leftist weenie we have right now.

      • mallen11

Please re-read my entire comment; I think you missed some of it. We go to church to learn God's Word not a political speech. The problem we have today are itching ears that are not interested in God's Word.

        • Greek Boyd

Your last comment says it all aabout your ramblings, "The problem we have today are itching ears that are not interested in God's Word". All the more reason to have a Christian Religion involved in the Political debate such as this one in particular. One with a true religion, the other with "black theology". You seemed to have choosen the latter. GOD Bless America, Lock N' Load? NOW?

          • mallen11

It is amazing to me how many people on this site are so afraid of learning what the Bible teaches but would rather live under the traditions and beliefs made up by man.

            It
is religion that destroys the spread
            of Christianity.

True Biblical Christianity is GRACE vs. the works of man
as in all other beliefs or religions. When people put their faith in anything besides Jesus Christ and His
gospel they will be led astray. One may
call themselves Christian but if they have not believed in Jesus Christ as
their savior there is no eternal life. Religions
do not teach the grace of God for salvation and living the Christian way of
life; they have some type of “working” for their salvation and do-goodism to
please their god. Every religious system only has dead leaders – Jesus Christ
is alive and seated at the right hand of the Father – our savior. It is the risen Christ that confirms His substitutionary
spiritual death on the cross. If at God
consciousness one is positive to get information about God; He makes sure they
get His message of salvation. Religions
            are the Devil’s Ace Trump.

          • Evermyrtle

You are right GOD should never be eliminated from anything in this world, which belongs to HIM. We go to HIS HOUSE, the CHURCH to worship Him, we sing praises to HIM, we learn everything that we can about HIM and we are to spread HIS WORD, live HIS WORD, WHERE EVER AND EVERY WHERE WE GO.

        • petroskhan

I've read your comment (three times now), and still have the same question. Maybe I'm slow. On the other hand, let me explain further what I meant, and then rephrase the question a bit…

I think, since we are citizens of this country, we have a right to decide who will hold the highest office in the land. As being a Christian is not a part of who we are (or should be), but the FOUNDATION of who we are, it would be better for us by far to elect those who hold our values in mind, and would serve the needs of this country best. One way we can safeguard our beliefs against continual encroachment by liberal lawmakers is to elect those who share our values. It is our right to do so. Discussing such things, perhaps in a meeting before or after church hours, a special meeting to discuss it, etc., would all serve this purpose.

So, that said, why not have a discussion (among church members) regarding candidates?

          • mallen11

I agree as long as it is not part of the worship/teaching service. We do that among ourselves in our homes and other places we get together. We discuss politics a lot but not at church. We try to apply what the Bible says regarding who is the right person to vote for. Since we are like minded we all agree and discuss other political topics as well.

Proverbs 29:2 When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked bears rule, the people mourn….

We sure are mourning at this time in our country.

      • GUS

It seems to me that it was Rick Warren who first invited Obama to his church later to be followed by McCain. Mr. Warren by inviting Obama to his church gave credence to this charlatan (Obama) now running this country wild by removing national prayer and recognizing Ramadan as a valid replacement of National Prayer; sinking this country into a 5 trillion dollars hole during his administration; confusing people with his religious beliefs being a Muslim in Indonesia and pretending to be a Bible believing christian; a favorite son of the Arab Countries; unknown background of his college education; doubtful records of his place of birth; spending 4 million dollars to hide his records (birth and college); a liar; destroying our Consitution. Mr. Warren should stay out of this year's election – the best thing he can do is expose Obama's sins to the Christians and American people because no one in the liberal media will expose this man. Many Christians in 1998 election thought that Rick Warren was endorsing Obama. We knew nothing of this man. Is Mr. Warren happy that Obama endorses gay marriage???? He should not even open the saddleback church to such an man without principle running our country today….

      • GrizzMann

Let them give up their tax exempt status. Better yet, have the IRS investigate them.

        • petroskhan

          ??

Why would a church have to do that?

          • Paula

"Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's" I think all the churches should pay their taxes – then they will all be on an even playing field since a large portion of the churches have already been telling their congregations who to vote for. Then the RIGHTEOUS Churches (not apostate) can start telling their congregations which candidates stand for BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES and those that do not.

          • petroskhan

Well, since I can't really understand why a church would file special documentation to avoid paying taxes, I would be inclined to agree with you, actually. Were I to found a church, I would pay the taxes, so as to be free of any special constraints. And I would freely discuss political issues. Not during or as part of a sermon/service, but it would certainly be discussed.

          • GrizzMann

You would still be forced to comply with Obamacare.

          • petroskhan

Well, there are ways of getting out of it. There are several cost sharing options out there which will get you out of taking part in BO's plan. I, for one, am looking for almost anything that will get me out of paying for someone else's abortions.

          • GrizzMann

In order to meet the false DEMOCRAT separation of church and state.

        • Paula

Let me understand this: You want the IRS to investigate…WHAT? Their speech – their opinions? The BIBLICAL principles they espouse? If the IRS is to do that, then they should have already been investigating the OTHER churches that have been doing this ALL ALONG – and we all know which churches have been "exempt" (think Eric Holder- kind of exempt) from any IRS investigating.

      • Evermyrtle

You are right, the church belongs to JESUS the world belongs to HIM, the country belongs to HIM and HIS people have just as much right, as anybody else to have a say so in how HIS country is run. A Mormon has gotten heavenly involved in politics. His politics and his church are very connected, you cannot really separate them. He takes out into the world what he learns in his church and uses it there, hopefully. If he does not use what he learns it is not good to him or to the country..

  • http://www.facebook.com/jerry.million Jerry Million

The 'shot heard around the world' was not fired from a gun, but rather from a pulpit by fiery preachers that knew freedom was a Biblical principle. This is where these discussions should take place but pastors now fear they will upset someone and there will be less in the collection plate. What a coward you are pastor!

  • Guest

We KNEW that at some point the real apostasy of Rick Warren would show itself as a emmisary of Satan…with lies and deception. Warren pushing his global initiative for Chrislam to open the door for the great falling away and the advent of THE anti-Christ and his one-world religion. Those Sheeple attending his mega-psuedo-Christian church in Orange County, CA should turn their back on him and do as the scriptures tell them to do "come out from amongst them" who betray Biblical Christianity.

  • Nina, .

This was the ONE forum that I thought might at least be more fair…but now this pastor has decided to cancel it! All of the other presidential debates will be moderated by liberal news hosts…all of whom, I am sure, will allow Obama to have his "pacifier" (telepromptor) next to his mouth, and wil ask him the "soft questions" and give him a pass on everything! We all know that Obama is incapable of speaking without it, yet we are bombarded with accolades of his brilliance and speaking superiority by these same politically-partial news people.
So, SHAME ON YOU, RICK WARREN for cancelling this forum. Was the real reason cowardice…or have you been blinded by the Obama camp also?? At least by cancelling the forum, you won't have to take any heat from the Obama crowd, and no one can accuse you of being "politically incorrect".

    • Bighoss

So " All of the other presidential debates will be moderated by liberal news hosts"? What is a "liberal news host"–someone other than Rush Lamebrain or Sean Insanity?

      • http://www.answersingenesis.org/ keyboardshark

A liberal news host is anyone employed by CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN and other 'mainstream' (or lamestream, to counter your Rush Lamebrain nonsense) news outlets, with the possible exception of FOX. They are virtually to a person all of the liberal ideology, and it shows up glaringly in their 'reporting'.

It is just a crying shame that the major networks have become so blatantly politicized to the point that they cannot just report the news without such obvious bias. Nina is exactly justified in her concerns about having liberal debate moderators. They have already shown from past experience that they are unable to leave their ideology behind and simply ask fair questions that are not woven with liberal talking points.

  • tarbella

I don't know, something sounds kind of off here.

  • David S.

Yet again, another article that leaves Ron Paul's name out. He, too, should be part of all Presidential debates since he is still running. Sad.

  • Someone Forgettable

Maybe he just doesn't want the T S A coming in a pawing over his congregants. Did you see where they will be at the RNC?

  • Evermyrtle

I simply cannot see allowing an anti-GOD, in GOD'S house, reasoning with what he believes and what he plans to do as president of our country. I believe Obama is completely anti-CHRIST and evil. He will not allow in HIM in his presence and I seriously doubt he is allowed in tthe WH. This very scary, because we know that GOD is still in control of America, whatever the anti-CHRIST may think or do

    • Bighoss

Will you and your ilk never learn? Don't you know that "the Antichrist" is Prince Philip; no,no, it was Ronald Wilson Reagan (6 letters in each name = 666!); or is it Vladimir Putin, or the Pope?? Every generation finds its versions of "The Antichrist," so why shouldn't the confused religionists of our day be afforded the same opportunity?

      Maybe it was Elvis???

      • Evermyrtle

The Bible does not tell us who the anti-CHRIST is, except the it is Satan he did not give us that right to name anyone as the anti-CHRIST. It is the liberals who propose Prince Phillip or whoever you said,

What do youmean by "ilk" I don't beleive that is in the dictionary? oh you mean the liberals!! The peoples of the world do like to name someone to fit the anti-CHRIST but I hate to disappoint you,it is not the Christians.

        • Bighoss

I don't know any "liberals" who trouble themselves concerning the identity of "The Antichrist." It is within the ranks of the extreme "end times"-obsessed evangelical dispensational premillennialists that I find the inane speculation about who "The Antichrist" might be and whether the alleged varmint is or is not already walking among us. Liberals and "peoples of the world" seem not to give a rat's rear about the subject.

As to "ilk", I suggest that instead of speculating whether that word is or is not in the dictionary, you could bestir your trifling self to dust off your own English language dictionary and simply LOOK IT UP! You have my personal Bighoss-certified guarantee that you will find it there. Check out the correct spelling of "believe" while you are there.

          • Evermyrtle

Really? You are the one which brought it up, I was answering your question?? Now you are denying it?? That figures!!

          • Bighoss

I "brought it up" only in response to to the blithering in previous posts by others and you know that, so your critique is irrelevant.

      • petroskhan

How DARE you accuse the King! ;P

    • http://www.answersingenesis.org/ keyboardshark

An anti-Christ is anyone who denies that Christ has come in the flesh. THE anti-Christ is Satan himself.

"For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist."

      2 John 1:7

"And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world."

      1 John 4:3

It cannot be a particular man because 2 John 1:7 says that the spirit of antichrist was already in the world at the time it was written, and no individual could live over 1000 years. The only one who fits the definition of being in existence both then and now is Satan.

      • petroskhan

And once again, the nail has been smitten on its proverbial head.

It is the OBAMA campaign that has lied and waged a hateful campaign so I disagree with you Mr. Warren!

    • daves

You don't think there have been any lies and hate from the Romney campaign?

      • GrizzMann

State the lies and hate. One example will do.

        • daves

          Ryan, Aug. 16: [Obama]
raided $716 billion from Medicare paid for Obamacare. This will lead
to fewer services for seniors. President Obama’s campaign calls this an
          achievement.

          • falling321

So where is the lie? Obamacare DOES take $716 from Medicare. $415 billion of which cuts reimbursement rates to doctors, hospitals, and nursing homes. What do you think will happen to elderly patients when those doctors, hospitals and nursing homes cut patients and reduce patient care? There are far better ways to guarantee Medicare will be there for the future and Ryan's plan is one of the best. Patients purchase their insurance directly, cutting out the government middleman, ending most of the waste, fraud and abuse immediately.

          • daves
          • fliteking

Brad, i mean daves, what you posted is the truth, somehow you'd like to take Ryan's truth and make it a lie, life does not work that way.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Martin-Saposnekoo/100000163560163 Martin Saposnekoo

Before we give Bill Clinton and, or
Barrack Husein Obama all the credit, why does everyone always leave out Ron
          Paul and Mitt Romney?

Remember, Ron Paul voted for the
homosexualizing of the military, has no problem with same sex marriages and
says that homosexuality is not a sin, but rather a Genetic issue.

Mitt Romney also supports the Gay Agenda
and married a Gay Couple in Massachusetts
          while Governor (see http://www.massresistance.com).

Everyone in the Ron Paul camp is claiming
          that they are America’s
last hope and almost worshiping them as if they are our Saviors.

This morning a number of writers claim
that the Pauls have never betrayed anyone yet ignore Ron Paul’s support of the
sodomites and same sex marriage as he voted his approval to allow them in the
United States Military which is a betrayal of God Almighty and our risen Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ who is King. And we now have Rand Pauls support of a
Mormon which is a Cult in one, Mitt Romney.

When prayer is asked for, never have I
seen or heard anyone who supports the Paul’s from any Pastors which includes
Chuck Baldwin or his son and attorney Tim or anyone in the Paul camp ever ask
or say anything about repentance which must come first before forgiveness and
          blessing from God.

And why is this? It’s because when one
feels that they are above even God Himself and His Laws, repentance is not
given even the slightest thought nor considered.

They all say that God’s Laws are supreme,
yet they support a man Ron Paul who has made a conscious effort as well as a
verbal statement against God’s Laws and calls it good. And now his son Rand has dug the knife even deeper into our backs and
scoffed at the God he claims he knows in his support of this Mormon who also
supports Gays in the Military as well as same sex marriages.

The God I worship and who is King says
that His eyes are too pure to look on evil, and He cannot tolerate wrongdoing*
yet they worship a man or in this case men, and forget God and His Laws as well
as His Commandments and in their vanity and pride they yet ask God to bless them
while supporting men who have set themselves before God.

They preach and teach from the pulpit and
in their correspondence that righteousness exhalteth a nation. But yet they
refuse to follow what God Commands in Deuteronomy
11 when He says that we are to keep all of His
commandments and obey Him. Instead, they refuse to see that they are
desperately in need of a repentant heart so that God can bless them and not
curse them* and our Nation without repentance by it’s people, will continue to
          suffer for it.

          • GrizzMann

I still did not find lies and hate. Sorry. A lie would be, Obama claiming his grandmother (the white one) was "but that she is a typical white person. If she sees
somebody on the street that she doesn’t know (pause) there’s a reaction
in her that doesn’t go away and it comes out in the wrong way.” Which is true. The lie would be, but that she is an atypical white person. without any racial animus. You see how the words, a typical, is changed to, am atypical, changes the entire meaning. Making a true statement into a false statement?

    • GrizzMann

Muslims are allowed to lie to unbelievers in order to
defeat them. A Mormon would be an unbeliever.

      • BohdanUke1

You're a disgrace to the human race. Anyone that would still consider that animal in the White House above a blade of grass, needs to turn himself into a mental ward.

      • bill1776

Reply to GrizzMann: According to the Koran we are all unbelievers. Some of my friends are Mormans they are good people that have accepted our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. A Mormon president would be better than a Muslim president who is destroying our country.

        • Esther Mae Egan

I disagree that a Mormon would be better. According to Hosea 8:4 neither would be better as neither know God and God does not know them.

          • petroskhan

Well, at least a Mormon wouldn't try to overthrow our laws in favor of sharia law…that's got to count for something.

          • Vladimir

Sorry, Esther Mae Egan, I can't let that pass without a humble interjection. I am a Mormon and I know God. From what I understand from the scriptures, God knows everything so He knows me, too.

          • Guest

The Bible wars true believers in God/Jesus/Holy Spirit to "come out from amongst them" (meaning unbelievers and cult worshippers). The problem with Mormons is they do as Satan leads them … lie and deceive. Mormons put more faith in apostates in their mighty 12 apostles, Book of Mormon, and Doctrines and Covenant, leading the cult than in the Words of God/Jesus.

        • GrizzMann

That is why President Obama can lie to all of us, all of the time.

The real reason? Warren KNOWS that Obama will be exposed for what he is doing to America and Warren is behind Obama. Warren is a CFR member in good standing and has literally sold his soul for fame and power. Warren wants Obama to win so he cannot support all the negatives that would come out about Obama…BUT, the bottom line on this is that the CFR will win either way because Romney, while a long shot better than Obama, is also the CFR's choice as well as Obama! With Romney we get a slower advance of the same end result, One World Government OF and BY the UN. The real choice was demonized out of the race, the only man who could have restored our Bill of Rights and Constitution…Ron Paul. If you snicker here….it's because you have boguht the lies of the media and left (same thing). What I want: Ron Paul 75%, Obama 0%, Romney 30%
BTW, Rick Warren wa son the stage with Obama a couple years ago shaking his head YES when Obama was discusing his abortion plans. Warren is a WOLF let in at the Sheep Gate!

Our Father says we are to pray and HE will heal our land. Debate will never heal anything. It's good entertainment occasionally but no one ever really says who they really are and what they really think. NO ONE. OVERCOMERS: Trust God. Pray to Him sincerely and He will hear us and heal us. If we don't we will wish we had and by that time it will be too late. I believe you made the right decision, Mr. Warren. I doubt anyone could be "civil" here. They may pretend to be but I don't think they know how to really be civil.

If Warren thinks the boys aren't playing nice, he should have used the forum as an opportunity to correct them. Too many gutless pastors have no stomach for the rough and tumble of the real world. I long for the old days when Christian leaders would rip each other mercilessly in public debates then walk across the street and have a beer and a cigar together.

I am a born-again Christian, and though I would love to see a true Christian in the White House, following scripture to both the Spirit and the letter, we need to remember that we are voting in a man to use his best wisdom and experience in governing our wonderful country. While Romney may not worship God the way I do, I trust that God has brought this man forward, a man that that loves this country, wants to see it return to it's prominence in the world, has the expertise and knowledge in business to understand and maintain budgets, which Obama has proven he either doesn't know or care about, and he has moral values that our CHRISTIAN nation were built on. For Rick Warren to say that both parties are "mud-slinging" is really misguided and just plain wrong. As a pastor, he's missed something very important…he's in a position to help our country get back to the basics of living freely and prosper by having jobs. Romney can and will do this, and Warren should certainly know that. I am saddened that, once again, a pastor has been deceived and persuaded to withdraw from such an opportunity. But I'll say this…God has the power to blind the fools, and to change hearts on election day. All the talk on the networks are only speculation, nothing more…prayer is much more powerful than the liberal media, and God is more powerful than Rick Warren's forum. Don't despair, conservatives…just keep praying and BELIEVING that Romney and Ryan will WIN!!!!!

We just left yet another church where the arrogance of the three pastors placed "themselves" as authority in the church instead of following the Biblical guidance/directive of church authority being pluralistic Bishop/Elder and Deacon. Given, a pastor is considered a spiritual gift, they also are "Cessationists", meaning the miraculous works of the Holy Spirit ceased being practiced early on in Church history. But, he had the arrogance to say, "I am a gift to this church." Such apostasy should be avoided and one would question their own salvation because being a pastor is not an ego-centered role in the church but one which should be as a shepherd of the flock.
