The line of Judaism is through the mother not the father as is realized today in the law of return.
His father could have been Mickey Mouse it would not have mattered.

According to Jewish law and the law of return it makes little difference what or who your father is. It is the religion of the mother, in this case Jewish, that qualifies one to be a Jew.
It is a Matrilineal line that is followed not Patrilineal!
