Faith Leaders Urge Expansion of 'Pro-Life' Medicaid Program

Over 100 national, state, and local faith leaders are imploring Republican governors to have the “wisdom and integrity” to expand their states’ Medicaid programs to cover an estimated 17 million low-income Americans who cannot currently afford health insurance. A joint statement issued by the religious leaders calls on lawmakers to accept the Medicaid expansion under Obama’s health reform law because “depriving struggling families of healthcare is wholly incompatible with the teachings of our faiths and the ideals of our nation.”

In a press call releasing the faith leaders’ statement, Sister Simone Campbell, the executive director of the Catholic social justice group NETWORK, said governors should embrace extending Medicaid coverage to uninsured Americans as a pro-life policy:

I call on all governors to expand Medicaid coverage in order to save thousands of lives. My strong support of Medicaid expansion comes out of my pro-life stance because it is the right and moral thing to do.

Campbell — who headed up the Nuns On A Bus tour this summer to raise awareness about the House Republican budget’s devastating effects on the poor — said that, as a person of faith, she believes it is wrong for a nation to fail to take the necessary steps to care for its citizens.

    Awesome, good for them!

Doctors take an oath and should ALWAYS be pro-life. That is what they are all about.

    • timpclimber

Many medical schools do not require the Hippocratic oath any more but all medical students have been carefully schooled in Evolutionary theory as they took premed.

      • Sama

        Disgusting what we have become.
        (Oaths taken do not change.
This includes the Oath to defend the Constitution from without AND within)
The next generation will be living under totally different mores.

One important question. Where will the States get the money to pay for the increased medicare? With the economy in the tank and many struggling to pay the rent, put food on the table will they welcome more taxes? As an administrator I always say when someone asks for a new benefit or budget increase, I cannot consider it until you show me how with our current resources we can pay for it. Nine times out of ten they can't. As the old saying goes, "If wishes were horses beggers might ride.

For the first few years the federal government will pay 90% of the cost. Eventually that goes down to 70% I think.

What is the price of a human life?

      • timpclimber

That's only if you agree to the whole Obama care package that will break the financial back of most States. Should they defund other State programs to add this one? That's why we are on the financial cliff now because we don't pay our current and past bills just kick them down the road. Yes human life is important but I've lived in Spain and other bankrupt countries where the health care is rationed and gets costlier each year. The great goal of many Spanish people is get enough money so they can afford private health care. Why do so many Canadians seek out health care in the U.S. if its so great there? If these seekers for more benefits can tell the law makers how to pay for it then I will believe they are real problem solvers not just short sighted bleeding hearts.

Medicaid is the only part states can opt out of.

I guess these idiots don't know that God gave that responsibility to the Church, NOT to the government!

It is sad the way supposed pro life proponents want to use the government to make women give birth but do not want to use government to help keep that child alive.

      • Sama

Even sadder the folks who want to kill innocent humans who are the result of their lusts. They refuse to take responsibility for their own actions. (I am not including incest and rape) They solve their 'mistakes' with murder.
There is a 'natural law', when you sow babies, you get babies. When you sow carrots, you get carrots.
No one is demanding the government BAN birth control, just don't make the ones not 'enjoying' your activity be the ones who pay for it. Gov. money is citizen money. The gov. has NO money that it does not take from someone else.
