Parents consider legal action over school yoga

A group of parents is bent out of shape by free yoga classes at schools in this San Diego County beachside community, fearing they are indoctrinating youngsters in eastern religion.

"There's a deep concern that the Encinitas Union School District is using taxpayer resources to promote Ashtanga yoga and Hinduism, a religion system of beliefs and practices," the parents' attorney, Dean Broyles, told the North County Times.

In an Oct. 12 email to district Superintendent Tim Baird, Broyles called the yoga program unconstitutional and said he may take unspecified legal action unless the classes stop.

This is the promotion of a false religion. I've been to yoga classes. While there may be some benefit to the exercises, the room was scattered with Buddha statues, incense and crystals. Give me a break. If it's about exercise, what's with the New Age paraphenalia? Here's an idea. Why not just exercise? What's wrong with bending and stretching to regular music instead of New Age chanting? Funny how we managed to grown up without it. No wonder the kids are stressed. The schools are telling them they're no better than a bunch of monkeys and there's no meaning to their lives, no moral compass, no ultimate Truth and no purpose to their lives. The Bible is forbidden to even mention in class. If they're mentioning God or Jesus, they'd better be cursing, not speaking His Name in reverence or they'll be expelled. C'mon.

This is New Age garbage and does not belong in school. The God of the Bible is the Source of all Truth. There may be some "truths" in false religions but the Bible has stood the test of time and will continue. It has withstood the assaults and challenges of every fool over the ages who has attempted to be the one who will disprove it. It is 100% accurate in science, archeology, medicine, history, logic, and every other way. All of its prophecies which have been fulfilled have been 100% accurate and this will continue until the End. The Bible copies nothing and no one and is the only reliable Source of Truth. And as for Christmas, Jesus was most likely conceived on December 25th and born on September 11th-12th. There is much out there that can be studied and uncovered if someone is desirous of actually finding out the truth instead of repeating red herrings and false statements of phony religions and cults. Educate yourselves.

Its time for the Christians to take over yoga. Throw out Buddha, who is dead btw, and cannot help you, and throw out the incense and crystals. Exercise to worship music to the Living God. You will be glad you did.

I do yoga on my WII fit and there's non of that new age stuff.

Thank you for this information; more good fuel for my list of why yoga is wrong.

  • Rev. James Hanratty

The goal of Yoga is union with the Absolute. (Hindu concept of God)

    • LouiseCA

I'll go with the goal of the Savior of the world.

    • Devasahayam

      On which it epic-fails!
      (I am a former Hindu — QED)

    • mallen11

Actually, the absolute is the God of the Bible, the Hindu concept of God is relative. Humanism is relative; the Lord Jesus Christ is absolute in all of His teachings.

  • John Adams

Why any Christian parent still sends their children to a government indoctrination center (a public school) is beyond my understanding. They are taking the most precious give God can give anyone (other than salvation itself) and throwing it (the gift – their child) to the devil.

I use to be a self-righteous, arrogant, legalistic, better than thou person before I started studying the Bible from a pastor who teaches from the original languages the way to live the Christian way of life instead of being told what we should do or not do but let God's Word convict the mind with His Word. I can spot them a mile a way. You are one of them. I hate the government school system too but not all people are rich like you and able to teach their children home schooling or go to a church that provides it. We have one homeschooled but under the State system that we monitor at home. Her PE class was to study and do yoga and we called and told them we do not believe in doing it and they took her off that lesson. They were reading a book in my granddaughter's English class last year that we did not approve of and she was given another book to read and work on by herself. I have fought the school system at every turn and have won. They will back down; even here in CA. My children went through the CA school system and every one of them are solid conservative Christians. My grandchildren are taught about the Lord Jesus Christ and His Word from a very young age in their home. We can't put everyone in the same peg hole and expect them to live as we do. We believe in living our lives as unto the Lord; to grow spiritually through the study of His Word and no one has the right to tell another person how to live. The sad part is that we have as a nation have neglected the teaching of His Word to the point that God is not longer important. I can't wait until my next Bible lesson; it gives me strength everyday to handle the problems and hardships our family faces and believe me, we have them. Give people a chance to grow spirtually without telling them how to live the way you think they should as you do in many of your comments.

      • John Adams

I can tell from your comments that you are an emergent church type person. Your evaluation of who is a "solid conservative Christian" really means nothing. That is because YOU are not a solid conservative Christian.
The fact is that the Bible contains MANY very specific and clear commands of what we are to do and how we are to do it. The TRUE Christian life doesn't have gray areas.

        • mallen11

It does not matter what you say about what you think I am as a Christian but what does matter is the way you try to tell others how to live their lives. God’s own complete and coherent message to man was recorded in perfect accuracy in the original languages of scripture: Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. They are the languages carrying Divine Authorship. Bible Doctrine is the only thing we have as believers to set us apart from the cosmic system. Ministers or pastors or whatever one is called who teaches God’s Word in our churches need to give their congregation the living Word of God consistently and accurately giving them the information that helps them to perceive, metabolize and apply it to their daily life not tell them what THEY think they should do or not do. That is between each Christian and the Lord.

Heb 4:12 For the word of God is alive and powerful sharper than any two-edged
sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

The word of God will convict of sin and will lead the believer to do what is right. You can't take a new believer and expect them to be a mature believer by telling them what to do.

Roman 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world (human viewpoint), but be transformed by the renewing (renovation) of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

          • John Adams

I disagree. Part of the responsibility of a pastor/teacher is to tell his congregation what the Bible says they must do.

          • mallen11

That makes him a "pulpit bully".

We need pastor-teachers to interpret the Bible for us to get the FULL meaning of
the Scriptures so we can grow spiritually and glorify Jesus Christ; not tell us
what to do. The only way we can grow spiritually is through the filling of the Holy Spirit by naming our sins to God the Father (1 John 1:9) especially before we read or hear the Word of God.

          • John Adams

I believe that your "pastor" is shirking his God-given responsibility.

          • mallen11

There you go again, you can't help yourself, telling other people what they should do.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Craig-Fales/1766064360 Craig Fales

That's what I like about my pastor is he doesn't TELL you what to do, rather he SUGGESTS what you should do. Then when judgement comes there is noone to blame but yourself.

          • mallen11

We both can be very thankful for our Pastors who teach the Word of God so that we can make the right decisions in our spiritual life that carries over to our daily living.

In reality we need to keep all religion out of school. Allowing Hindu today gives precedence for Islam and other cult 'religions'.
