For the first time in the history of Christianity, Vatican City was ringing to cries of ‘Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!’, and Ballina’s Sister Kathryn Sweeney was right in the thick of it.

Sr Kathryn was part of a select group of nuns from the Sisters of St Joseph sent to the heart of the Catholic Church to see her order’s founder, Mary MacKillop, officially declared a saint by Pope Benedict XVI.

Sr Kathryn said she was in StPeter’s Square when the Pope utt-ered the short sentence recognising Mary MacKillop’s canonisation during a Latin Mass – as the word’s left His Holiness’ lips the many Australians in the square went wild with excitement.
