As Adam would soon discover, life with Eve was not always a picnic. He discovered that she had her limitations as a woman, just as he had his limitations as a man, but through all the difficulties they would encounter, a sovereign God was working “all things according to the counsel of His will” (Ephesians 1:11).

For those of us who are married, God has designed each of our spouses just for us. They are “made to order”—made to His divine specifications with our individual needs in mind. He wants us first of all to recognize our need for them and then to see that they are His perfect match, His perfect fit, for meeting that need, though it might take some years of adjustment together to see clearly!

God’s idea about what we need in a mate is very seldom what our idea is after a few years of marriage. A typical attitude after about 8-10 years together is, “She seemed so perfect for me before we were married; how could I have been so blind? How could I have missed her self-absorption and self-centeredness?” Or, “He seemed so suave and virile. Why didn’t I notice his anger and lack of self-control?”
