The Imam of al-Azhar, Egypt’s foremost Islamic institution, met Monday with a delegation of German lawmakers of the Christian Democrats bloc of Volker Kauder, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s top parliamentary official, a Palestinian news site reported.

‘Foreign attempts to divide this country and region along the lines of Muslims and Christians run against the values of human rights and Christianity itself,’ Imam Ahmed al-Tayeb said, according to the al-Fajr al-Jadeed website.

The meeting, held 10 days after a bombing at a Coptic church in the Egyptian city of Alexandria left 23 people dead, was part of efforts by German Christian Democrats to safeguard religious freedom around the world.
