One hundred and eighteen days.

This was how long James Loney and three other men – Harmeet Singh Sooden, British citizen Norman Kemper, and American Tom Fox – were held captive in Iraq.

The four men were part of a delegation with Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT), an organization which trains volunteers in non-violent intervention to work with grassroots communities in lethal conflict zones.

On Nov. 26, 2005, Loney’s life, and those of his companions, was changed forever.

Loney was in Ottawa recently to speak at the Ottawa Writer’s Festival, and was joined alongside CBC journalist Melissa Fung, who was kidnapped while on assignment in Kabul.
